I would definitely change broadheads, I have blasted right thru shoulders and never had any trouble.

just curious,..is the carbon arrow broke on the end or is that the way that the shaft was shaped when the broadhead was put on it?..and how was the broadhead attached to the shaft?

Been there myself. The first buck I ever got a shot at with archery equipment and I hit him in the shoulder. I knew it and looked for him to no avail. Worst thing is he was the biggest deer I had ever had a shot at! Chin up "doc" and good luck the rest of the year

Get some muzzy's. If you cant remember the name of the broad head you are using you must not be very attached to it. So get a good broad head.

looks like the broadhead broke off just outside the insert as there is still a little blue sticking out from the end of the arrow.
Gee go figure, a mechanical broadhead failure....
Unless you hit an artery (resulting in a good blood trail) I would guess he will heal up unless it gets infected.
Here is my guess as to what happened from your description and the photo.
Good shot at deer. Arrow hits a little forward and gets the shoulder bone. Broadhead fails and snaps at the insert wasting all the arrows energy instead of penetrating to vitals.
Deer runs off with sore shoulder.
Look into some solid fixed blade heads. It is said that bow hunting is a game of mistakes. Seek to eliminate potential mistakes anywhere possible.
Tape down anything that might clink against your stand at the wrong moment, develop routines to make sure you can be ready to shoot at any second without a bunch of scrambling around. Simplify simplify simplify!

I would definitely change broadheads, I have blasted right thru shoulders and never had any trouble. EXACTLY RIGHT! My 12 yr old son shooting 38 lbs has had 4 complete pass thrus with a good fixed blade head, one of which was quartering away and the arrow entered behind the on side shoulder and broke the offside shoulder going out, of a 96 lb field dressed doe. I have broke both shoulders of mature deer many many times with a bow! I would definitely be taking a look at my equipment!

A thunderhead or muzzy will blow through a shoulder like a hot knife through butter,You need to pull a little weight also, I shoot 68 pounds right now but have considered lowering it,My shoulder is gone and it hurts terrible when I draw a bow.
