I'm trying to like it, but it just doesn't compare to holding a firearm.

I started bowhunting last year, hunting from the ground. Purchased a good compound. Missed a couple does I shot at. Lost others because I couldn't draw while they were looking in my direction.

Before this season, I traded the compound for a good crossbow. Shoots nice. Opening day I saw five deer, but just slightly out of range at 50 yards. I've been out half a dozen times and have only seen one fawn sice opening day. I saw about 8 does crossing the street as I left though!

I'm so ready to have that smokepole, or my Kimber .308, or my Winchester 94 in my hands. I'm also VERY ready for November to get here.

Last year I bowhunted HARD with no luck. Then, I killed two bucks in less than a week during rifle season. After the second deer, I didn't go back out again. I seriously think that all the sweating and hiking with the bow for 2 months just burned me out. By the time I got a couple deer, I was DONE. Perhaps I would be more motivated later in the season without the bow.

So, I'm thinking of trading my crossbow for a nice smokepole. I might stay out of the woods until things heat up in a few weeks. Last year's rut was AWESOME in my area. I'm just getting sick of wearing myself out to see out-of-range deer every so often.

Thats part of bowhunting. It's a challenge. Once you get that first one you will be hooked, nothing like shooting one from a close distance.

If it was easy everyone could do it. Makes you tighten your game up to where you can get in range. Stick with it and work hard and you'll get it.

"I'm just getting sick of wearing myself out to see out-of-range deer every so often."

Then learn how to get closer to what you seek to kill. Ground hunting is hard enough for those who are experienced hunters. Get in a stand and start to watch and learn. There are ways to get much closer to those deer and if you are seeing deer then half of the battle is already won.
I'll have to say that it is MUCH easier to fire a gun or muzzleloader at a deer to kill it but I assure you it takes MUCH more woodsmanship to Bow hunt effectively.

Don't give up so easily.

Use bowhunting as more of a "scouting trip" so you don't feel like you are wasting your time

It's not some peoples bag. However, if you get a big ole momma doe fooled then you will be hooked. I like bow hunting because it makes does feel like a real trophy. Gun hunting just isn't as much of a challenge any more to kill a deer. Now killing a good mature buck...thats another story.

this is what i use bow season for,i dont get upset if it rains or life changes my plans,i dont get to full boil until muzzleloader season opens then its full speed ahead.hunting is something to enjoy & if you feel burnt out then modify your hunting, shorter trips, new area's,heck hunt with some other folks & you might find out things you have been missing .i have had a lot of great times in the woods & never seen a deer, coarse in this part of the state were not over loaded with any wildlife.
