It definitely separates the men from the boys. Learning how to become consistently succesful with a bow will teach you more about deer and how to hunt them, as well as woods skills, than most anything else you can do.

I'd say crossbow may have been what's turned you off a little. It's nothing like a compound. Sounds to me like you should really try to get in the spirit of bow hunting and go out and practice with your compound until you become a deadly unstoppable force that the deer fear.
And get up in a tree!

Also of note is the understanding you gain of deer by hunting the full season. I've talked with exclusive gun hunters before who seemed to be under the impression that deer behavior is the same in bow season as it is during the rutting gun season. Why would they know any different if that's all they've ever been exposed to?

Right on Winchester. Also, by the end of bow season, I know exactly where to be for gun. I have learned so much in the last two years about deer. Archery is addictive.

This is one of the most effective aspects of bow hunting. there have been many seasons i have not got one in range, but come opening day of ML season i knew where the deer were, where they were coming from, and when they would be there and that made it that much easier.
