Another lesson learned tonight!

I hunted from the ground this afternoon and never felt confident in my spot. I decided to pack it in a little after official sunset but there was tons of legal shooting light left. As soon as I walked out of my spot there were three deer waiting to come into the woods. If I had waited a little bit longer I might have scored.

Lesson learned....again

I stayed until last light and killed a nice doe tonight. Usually don't stay that late with a bow.

If you have sat in the woods all evening the last few minutes won't hurt. I had to learn this same lesson. Glad it worked for you this way instead of a nice buck standing there. \:D Hope it works out good for you next time. Good luck.

My eyesight dictates when I leave the stand. Sometimes it is early and sometimes I can stay until the end of legal shooting time. When I can't focus good enough, I head for the truck.

yeah, I always have to leave a little early myself.

I have an artificial lens in my dominant eye. Even with high quality European optics, I don't get the full benefit of those $600 scopes. I do have to get a good scope just to be on par. And forget about open sights, I haven't seen the bead on the end of my shotgun since January 17, 1991.

It sends me back to the house when plenty of shooting light for folks with good eyes.

oh well, I'm usually back at the house and deep into the marshed taters before Big Foot wakes up to get yall. \:D

Happens to all of us. If we lived to be a 100 years old, we would eventually learn enough lessons to be darn good hunters!

I am with you on the artificial lens. I have them in both eyes.
It makes low light ruff at times.

I only get out of my stand when I can no longer shoot....when I can no longer see my sights....

Like most, I busted a big deer one time. Just as my feet hit the ground, he bolted. He couldn't have been more than 50 yards away and i just never saw him before deciding to get down.....There was 10-15 minutes of legal light left....!

he never blew, just ran, but i heard that loud thumping sound that big deer makes as their feet hit the ground, I turned just quick enough to get a glimpse of his backside and some of his rack.....

never saw him again....ever!

I guess we all have a similar story and if you go enough, you'll have MORE of these type stories....

but ain't it a hoot!!!

Sometimes I force myself to leave about about that time. Or I get ready to go and just watch and scout for another day.Considering you were using a bow you did not make a bad choice IMO..I try not to wait too late with a M.L. or Big Gun. Yes your chances of seeing deer are greater. The later it is the more difficult the after the shot process can be. It could have been a very long night. If you wait too late you could face not being able to put in a finishing shot if nessacary, Hard tracking with all the leaves starting to fall,if no recovery a sleepless night wondering, then worrying if the yotes are feasting on your kill. They'll still be around for another day.

I stay until I can not see my pin on my bow. Don't know how many times I have lowered my bow then see a deer walking but then again if you can't see your pin you can't shoot anyways. Seems like a lot of folks get down early where I hunt. I can hear all the trucks leaving about the time I am lowering my bow. never understood that unless they are scared of the dark or something

In order not to spook deer (or spook them less) I stay until it is fully dark in order not to tip off bucks to my tree stand stands.

i used to do the same thing i would sit till an hour after dark, until i started scratching the leaves down to the dirt around my stands, when i would come in an hour and a half before daylight i would find all kinds of deer tracks in the dirt around my stand sites. that told me after i left every deer that came within bowrange during the night were sniffing my trees out any ways so now after legal lights over i leave

Same here.

I have blood trailed bunches of deer in the dark by lantern or flashlight.

I missed a mature buck one time because of this........

It was muzzleloader season 5 years ago. I told myself "you're not gonna see anything, give yourself a headstart climbing down form this (I was in Baker climber)tree". So I broke open the muzzleloader and removed the primer. As soon as I did this, a nice mature whitetail buck came walking along the ridge giving me an easy shot if I had only had a primed gun. I tried to put the primer back and get a shot ,but it was too late at that point.

Live and learn
