Do you use a 130, 150, or other grain bullets? I can never seem
to make up my mind what bullet weight to use year after year.

I use a 230 grain bullet when I hunt with my .270. I use a Swift Scirocco and have had great success with it as well as the Barnes Triple Shock.

I primarily shoot a 7mm with a 150 gr. bullet, but have zero issues with a .270 and think it is one of the better whitetail cartridges.

I would use 150 grain here in TN, especially for close in shots.

So far it seems 130 might be the best choice. Another question
might be, what makes a "silver tip" bullet better than say, a
core-lokt bullet?

I don't shoot a 270 (great cal though)but i would shoot what flies the best out of your rifle. You are only talking about a few inches at 500yds and only about 100lb of energy difference. If one make and grain shoot much better than all the rest go with that one. I doubt a deer could tell the difference. I have a few buddies that use 130s if i remember correctly.
Best of luck,

My gun really likes the 140 gr Hornady BTSP. Shot numerous different cartridges through my .270, and I group the best with this round. Also grouped well with the Hornady 140 gr SST.

IMO core lokt bullets do not stack up to the newer bullet technology with controlled expansion etc etc. Core lokt are a cheaper round, and will certainly get the job done, but the newer bullets are far superior in terms of weight retention and expansion.

i agree. core lokt will get the job done but i found if you dont drop them in there tracks they definately will not leave a good blood trail. i swapped about 6 years ago when my dad shot a nice 10pt. we were looking for it after dark and i just happened to walk up on it. it was a perfect double lung shot but didnt find blood til i got to the deer.
the hornady sst's are just amazing. every deer and coyote ive shot have left about a softball size exit hole everytime.

150grn Ballistic Silvertips over 53 grains IMR 4350, tailored cartridge length in my Winchester Model 70 is one bad, BAD round.

1/2" at 100, 1 1/4" at 200. and just over 2" at 300yds.

140gr's here. They seem to be the best of both worlds with trajectory/velocity and energy, and they group real well out of my Rem 700. I have used NBT's in the past, but, despite getting a bunch of bang-flops, I also experienced a lot of meat damage and often no exit wound. Also had a problem finding a doe that I shot in the shoulder... did not get good penetration, but finally found her the next day after the coyotes did. I now use Sierra Gamekings and am experimenting with Accubonds.

I say just use which ever gr. you want...because its most likely not going to make much differance to the deer. bullet construction is the key over weight imo... ;\)

130gr Hornady Interbond sighted 2.5 to 3 inches high at 100. Makes it point blank out to 300. The only bullet NOT to shoot out of mine was Federal 150 round nose! I bought out a small shops supply of 270 ammo when they were going out of business and accidently ended up taking them on a weekend hunt to Giles. I missed 1 at 200 and 1 50 yds. I had shot other 150's before and inside 200 there was not mmuch difference BUT when I went back and shot these I couldn't hit the target BACKER! It was a lesson learned. Bullet type and not just weight makes a huge difference....

Its going to sound crazy but I've shot the winchesters and the remington's both and liked them both. What decided it for me was the chrome color. I've got a habit of losing shells when I unload my gun or if they fall out of my pocket in thick leaves, The chrome was 10x easier to pick up on the ground. With ammo as expensive as it is i don't care to lose any.

I used 130 grain winchester super X from 1998-2008, loved em and never had a problem, fartherst shot I ever took was at my dad's guestimate bout 250 yds and he only ran about 50yds, switched to 150 grain last yr simply cause I couldnt find a box of 130 in all of west tn, aint no reason to pay big $ for shells when the $20 box does just fine

A 2" group isnt just fine for some people though, its always nice to know you can make a 300 or 400 yard shot if needed with no problem.

IMO...as a hunter that has only used a 270 as my choice my whole life I can only say that you have to make a marriage between a rifle and bullet. I have 3 different 270's each one shoots a different round. Try different rounds till you have what you are looking for in a shot group. I have a Remington, Savage, and Browning and they all shot a different rounds. Good Luck...

PS: You can not find a better deer rifle than a 270, IMO...

130 gr that shoots good out of your gun is what I would take to the woods. I like the 130 gr Hornady Interbond and Swift Scirocco out of my 270 WSM and have seen the same bullets work flawlessly out of my buddies 270. I have also seen the 130 gr SST, Gameking, and Barnes bullets work with good results as well. If I couldnt find a 130 gr load that shoots good out of my gun, I dont think I would lose any sleep if I found a 140 or 150 gr load that did.

140. Almost as flat as a 130 and the ballistic coeficient near a 150gr. If you shoot factory loads the Winchester Supreme 140gr Accubond is hard to beat! I've taken a few at 400yds+, but I do a great deal of practicing at that range. Zeroed at 200 it only drops @ 17in. at that range. Givem a try!

Federal 150 grain round nose.

Use what your gun shoots best.

A lot of great feedback on this thread. Taking a different approach, I'd like to offer one 270 cal. round to avoid: Remington Premier Accutip 130 grain.

The round is extremely accurate, but not a good choice on deer. Check out the performance review on MidwayUSA's website.

That is the same bullet as the Hornady SST, Hornady makes them for Remmy.

Go heavier for woods and lighter for fields. Zero in with the lighter since you'd typically have a further shot in a field. I use the heaviest I can find. 150 if they got it rem cor lokt

Sierra Game Kings (130) is another that shot very well in mine. Equal to the NBT in accuracy.

Perfect TN .270 load
I use a 130 gr. everywhere. I have shot deer , mule deer out to 300 yards with the 130 core lock, and deer as close as 10 yards. never a problem !!!

dont worry, ive killed many with the 130 sst,all shoulder shots all drt, never failed me,you cant blame bullets for bad shots, any chunk of lead put in the right place will kill a deer they are not super critters as some want to say, right shot = dead deer
