The rut is influenced in some part by the moon and it's phases as has been shown in different studies.
Actually, ALL of the REAL studies prove without a shadow of a doubt that the moon has absolutely NOTHING to do with actual breeding.

bucks are ready to "rut" as soon as the velvet is off. the does determine when the true rut is.

bucks are ready to "rut" as soon as the velvet is off. the does determine when the true rut is. I disagree. If this were true, then I believe you would see bucks trailings does all the time after their velvet was off, just waiting on them to come into estrous. Just my opinion, but there is a huge difference in the bucks activity when the rut is starting to kick in or getting close.

For the last 3 years(including this year) I'm seeing more scrapes this early than I am rubs. Dunno why? Could it be that the EHD outbreak helped with herd dyanmics? This year is the best "deer sign" year I've seen. The EHD really hurt me for a couple years but it appears to be panning out great now.
I think it helped out a lot. There were way to many does in Willamson and it thinned them out a bunch. Like you said it was slow for a couple years but i saw more mature bucks on my property last year than any year out of 18 years.Mother nature knows what shes doing!

And you will. Bucks will pester does any time they see them from early September through March.

The problem wit that theory is EHD kills an equal percentage of males and females. If you're losing females, you're losing males also.

Nope, has nothing to do with temperature. Has everything to do with the length of the nights. Each local population of does will have estrus timing genrtically encoded into them as to what length of the nights (as the nights get longer in fall) it takes to trigger estrus.
Now in the South, other factors can have an influence, but the weather is not one of them. The "other factors" all involve herd dynamics and health (sex ratio, buck age structure, doe age structure, acorn production food availability, etc.).
