Man it's been a few years since I've gone 3 sits without a deer. Maybe the fact it's raining leaves is keeping them bedded? Maybe I'm just in the wrong place at the wrong time? UGH! Hope it turns around soon. How's everyone else doin?

Wow, it would be common in my area to go three sits without seeing deer.

I have been seeing deer all over my place. Of course im in unit L though. I haven't killed anything and its been one of my best seasons in a while.

I'm happy to hear others are doing well! BSK typically right now I start seeing deer every other sit at least. Not always where I can shoot with a bow but still there. We just have so many deer out where I live. Oh well, it's called hunting and not shooting for a reason right!? Maybe im just stressin cause we need the meat. Ill quit whining lmao. Hope everyone has a great season!

Although deer density plays a big role, deer sighting rates are often connected to visibility. We have a moderate deer density (around 20 deer per square mile) but our visibility is very limited due to habitat and steep terrain. It would be very unusual to be able to see a deer beyond 40 yards as long as the leaves are still on, and rare beyond 80 yards after the leaves are off.

been out five times total. seen deer every time but one. killed an eight pointer opening weekend and a doe on monday of opening week. was on vacation last week so don't know what the deer are doing now. hope to get back in stand on saturday.

And like you say, it all depends on terrain and layout.....Our properties are pretty similar (from what I remember from previous conversations) - Strictly hardwoods with straight ridge / hollow terrain consumed (barely) with a few food plots. On average, about 80 yards is max while on stand after the leaves fall....Some places, we can see 150 yards, but almost NEVER do you see a deer that far away  .....most are within about 60 - and thats being liberal on distance

That is what I would put my money on. I know I have probably said this at some other time in my deer hunting career, but I don't think I have ever seen this many acorns, and the trees still have a ton to drop.

The place I hunt in Roane County has so many that it is laughable. Weird how it could be spotty, but I guess it happens.

Acorns are everywhere here. I have been going to my usual spots where deer funel through and they are still funelling through. Since the acorns are everywhere they have no need to stray off their normal paths. I am batting a 1000 this year so far. Everytime I have went to the stand I have seen deer. I have not over hunted any of my spots this year and that helps alot also. I hope by saying this I haven't cursed my luck.

Our average is 17 yards over 3 years. Primairly bow but still close! We do start to see deer about every hunt come end of Oct until gun season and I think our county deer per mile is around 11. They just move towards the thick this time of year and lord knows I have enough of that!

Virtually no acorns at my place either. The late drought wiped them out.
Some are dropping, but most of those have shrivelled nut inside, are hollow, or are worm-eaten.

there are 2 giant white oaks in the yard of granny's old house. one of our stands is only about 80 yds behind the house. with the old tin roof on the house, the acorns hitting it will keep you awake!! i have heard a grand total of 3 acorns hit the roof.
the ones i checked behind work yesterday are shrivelled or rotten as BSK said.

So if the amount of acorns is what's getting them not to move so much what would be the reason? Constant clatter? Or just the fact they do not have to move around much for food?

Food availability. Deer will only move as far as necessary to meet all of their requirements. If they can meet all of their requirements in a small area, they will do so. When food is everywhere...
In addition, acorns digest more slowly than foods such as food plot plants or agricultural plants. I deer is driven to feed by the volume of food currently in their stomach. As the stomach empties, they feel hunger. If the stomach empties slower, they feel hunger less often.
It's pretty common in hardwood environments for deer sightings and harvests to go down in a bumper acorn year and go up in an acorn failure year. When acorns are plentiful, deer do not have to move as far or as often to feed, reducing their susceptibility to hunters.

Gotcha! So pretty much my theory of jumping out right after a storm is a horrible idea when there are tons of acorns on the ground. Makes sense... All they have to do is lay down and move there head around to find water and food... Darn you acorns!!!! Hahahahahaa
