I have found that most times a single deer traveling through the area will be a button.
One piece of property I have been hunting they want does killed but specifically ask for you not to shoot a single antlerless deer that comes out.
Pretty good idea imho.
Button bucks are the least cautious deer and are often the first deer in an antlerless social group to enter open feeding areas.
If you want to limit the harvest of button bucks, DON'T shoot the first antlerless deer to step out into a food plot or any solitary antlerless deer feeding in a food plot. High odds it's a button buck.

I made the mistake last year of shooting a button buck. It was during muzzleloader at last light, I shot and missed on the first shot. The deer didn't run off so I reloaded and got ready again. The button buck started walking toward me. I should have known something was odd. I killed him with the 2nd shot and realized he was a button.
That goes hand in hand with BSK on the least cautious/curious statement.

I shot what I thought was a medium size doe the first week of the season only to find out it was a button buck. I had the same thoughts that maybe it was last years deer maybe born late.

The best way to identify fawns from adult does is to look at the distance from the tip of the nose to the center of the eye, and then compare that to the distance from the center of the eye to the center of the earhole. On an adult doe, the nose-to-eye distance will be at least twice the eye-to-earhole distance. On a fawn, the two distances will be much closer. These differences can even be seen if the deer is looking right at you. Adult doe. Again, look at the two distances; nose-to-eye and eye-to-earhole:  Fawn:  The differences in the two distances can be seen even when the deer is looking at you: Adult doe:  Fawn:
