Over the past 2 hunts,I've had 2 differ button bucks in bow range and both of them was traveling alone.I watched them for a good while and know for sure no other deer was following..Do they typically travel alone,or is it just this time of year?? Could it be that it is dispersal time for them? How old are buttons typically? I know some are this years deers, but I gotta think that these 2 that i've seen are 1.5yr old deer..No way they were this years deers, they was too big for that.

ive seen alot of buttons travel alone starting about this time of year.
would be hard to believe one was 1.5 though. maybe it was just an early bloomer and put some more meat on its bones than the others.

not saying your wrong thats just my opinion.

Went to Tara Wildlife in Mississippi several years ago. The guide was talking about the antler restrictions and doe harvests. He then talked how they wanted us to be careful not to harvest any button bucks.

He said if you see a single deer, look very close to make sure it is not a button. This time of year, they will most likely be traveling alone. "Bucks don't want them around, and the does don't either".

As far as the the age goes, I have always thought that they were this years offspring. As far as size goes, they probably wouldn't have looked as big if they would have been standing next to their mama.

I just find it hard to believe that these deer was born this year..I'm still getting pics of does with their fawns, and so im seeing how big the fawns are right now,and these button bucks are way bigger than these fawns. Some of the fawns still have a spot or 2 on them..

I shot a button buck that was alone one time, thought it was a Doe, I always wondered if they traveled alone or not. I have seen some deer this year traveling alone and can't tell if it is button bucks or not. I hate to shoot another one. Button Bucks look like small - medium sized Does to me, not yearlings. I'm with you Cecil, they look too big to be a yearling IMO. But what do I know.

I think you are seeing this year deer. In our area we have very few fawns but they are larger than usual. I can't explain why. I think you might be seeing some buttons that had their mom harvested. In my opinion that's a good thing.

We currently have two 2.5 old twins that I took their mom a couple of seasons ago and they have stayed in the same area of the farm since. Last year they were pitifull looking spikes, this year they are incredible looking 9pts. I never would have imagined that they would turn out like they have. I just hope they stay and we can protect them b/c in 2 yrs they will be monsters!

These buttons may be orphans. Or they could simply be traveling alone for periods of time. Years ago when I helped participate in a GPS-collar study, we captured and put GPS-collars on a mother doe and her button buck fawn. These GPS-collars were collecting positions (accurate to +/- 7 yards) every 20 minutes around the clock for months. When looking at the data, we found that the button buck would wander away from his mother for many hours on end, often getting as much as a half a mile away from her, only to suddenly run buck and find her (and how he knew where she was is beyond me).

This is too early for dispersal, as mother does don't chase off their male offspring until just before their first birthday (in late spring) or just before the rut when the buck is a 1 1/2 years old (generally in October).

I have found that most times a single deer traveling through the area will be a button.

One piece of property I have been hunting they want does killed but specifically ask for you not to shoot a single antlerless deer that comes out.
Pretty good idea imho.
