In all of the crap with losing my deer stand this past week I forgot to post this story here...
I started bow hunting three years ago in Kentucky. I had hunted some when I was younger...I even took my first deer (a nice 8 point) the year I moved to KY in 2000. But did not hunt much regularly (if any) until I started bow hunting.
I just moved back to TN in August. A couple of years ago, my parents bought my grandparents' farm. So this is the first year that I have lived in TN, and pretty much had full range to hunt whenever I wanted...I plan to put in a food plot next year and try to use some deer management techniques.
Two Saturdays ago I got to go hunting the first time this season. I got into the woods around 2:00. About 4:15 three does came down the path the opposite way I thought they would (downwind of me). The lead doe got within 15 yards. I was about to draw and her nose went straight in the air...she winded me and backtracked 25 yards or so. I didnt have a clear shot. For a long time I thought she would come to my right. But after 10 minutes or so, all three took off with their "white flags" up.
Another two hours or so went by and here, it started getting dark around 6:30. I decided I would wait another 15 minutes or so and go rescue my parents from baby sitting at the farm house. That was about the time it got interesting.
About 10 minutes later 4 does come flying down the path (the same direction the other three had come from). I drew my bow as they got close and yelled to try to get them to stop as all four went directly under me. They stopped about 40 yards behind me with no shot. I was so dissapointed that I had yet another opportunity get by me.
I watched them for a bit, and as I was two more does came from the same direction and stopped about 30 yards from me but with some trees and brush in the way. I drew, waiting for one of the two to step into a clearing for me to have a shot. The doe began meandering towards me...back and forth...always without a shot. I stayed at full draw for what seemed like 30 minutes haha. Finally she came out from behind the barrier about 5-7 yards directly below me. About that time my arms had had it. So I lost my draw...and she took off about 25 yards. I was so irritated, but she stopped quartering away at about 30 yards. I put my pin on her shoulder and let one fly. I heard a thump, but thought I had hit a tree...she flew off. I sat in disgust. I felt like I had blown 4 great opportunities.
I had forgotten about the other doe that had come in with her. I figured even if I had hit the first one, I could still take this one. She came out perfect broadside at 15 yards. I went to draw my bow and couldnt...my arms were done. She heard this and took off. Another missed opportunity. Totalling 4 in about 10 minutes. I was so angry.
So I waited the last few minutes of daylight and started down my tree to make the walk of shame to the house. I wanted to see if I could find my arrow. I looked around for several minutes...and I finally found it stuck in the ground. It was a complete pass through with the all important bright red bubbly blood. I was flying high. I went to the house and ate supper with my parents. My wonderful dad, the non-hunting trooper, helped me find her and spent the next 4 hours holding the light while I gutted and quartered my first bow deer (first time I had gutted and quartered anything haha). Funny thing...she ran out and died directly to the left of my path home...had I looked over I would have seen her dead before supper.

wow...that sounds horrible Tiny. I learned a lot about my first deer in 2000. I knew nothing, but this very friendly neighboor helped me...and we completely ripped open the gut sack. I thought that stench would be around forever. I can only imagine what a gut shot would do to help that stench along before you even got started lol.
I was very careful to keep that gut sack in tact when I was field dressing...but I thought my dad was going to lose his cookies when I started pulling out the intestines haha.
