I learned more about deer, especially bucks, when I started passing on small bucks.

If its a small property than the deer don't live on the property.

First off, especially since you are new....HAVE FUN !

If you want to shoot a legal deer...SHOOT IT!

You should be hunting for your ultimate satisfaction and not to gain the approval or admiration of others.

Try to maximize the enjoyment of your first seasons. There will be plenty of time to be "serious" later after you have reached many other goals along the road.

I have no problem passing bucks on some of my properties, but to tell a guy who has never harvested a buck he should pass is beyond me.

But heck what do I know? I don't let 'em all walk \:\)

Do what makes you happy. Don't worry about what others think. If you see the 10 pt shoot him obviously, but just go and have fun and if you feel it when you see a deer shoot it. If not don't.

They don't get big, dying young. Young bucks walk, spank does if you want to fill the freezer.

First of all, congrats on your first deer!!!!!!

Secondly, you need to decide, as others have stated, what is going to make you happy. Being a NEW hunter, anytime you can get ANY deer in range for an archery kill and successfully harvest that animal; then I say good for you and do it if you get the chance. Young buck, old buck or a doe—there will be many more deer down the road that is going to take you to school and leave you frustrated! There is plenty of time to get picky down the road, just hunt, have fun and make memories that will last a lifetime. It is very true that the monsters don't get that way by getting shot, but there are many monsters out there that put the sneak move on the most experienced hunters in the world and on this website. That being said, if taking the spike would fill your heart with as much pride and joy as taking that big 10, or the 6 pointer; then by all means do it and be proud of it—and don't worry what others think! You hunt for you and no one else!

TO each is his own we are going to KY this season during the 2nd mzloader season and I have been up 2 years in the past and not filled my buck tagged letting small ones go, its all in the mind of the shooter, some ppl might think that a 6pt is just as much of a trophy as the stud 10, I personally would wait on the 10 cause I have killed several scrubs (little Bucks) in my time, this way you will have 2 STUDS next year! Price you gotta pay for mature deer but killed which ever you want and GOod Luck!
