My guess would be plums gone wild ?? What is the chance that there is a old home site somewhere in the area ?? The area which he found them is within the security fence of the Air Force base (AEDC). There is no telling what used to be where back in the days.....
I didn't find them on the base....They're from Lexie

Plums, persimmons, muscadines... While it would be nice to know what they are, from a deer hunting perspective it really doesn't matter. Deer will eat any of them. The question is are they eating them. If there is fresh feeding sign, then it's a good spot to hunt. My experience with soft mast is that there has to be a significant quantity of it and not many acorns around to really get the deer's attention. It's all about the sign.
Kinda what I've been thinking as well, but I just wanted to try and identify the fruit.
BTW I still haven't made it back out there to take pictures of the tree and leaves....

What did the bark look like? Dark and blocky = persimmon. Grayish and scaly = plum
I would be able to tell you if I could see the bark.
