There two types of persimmons. This is male red persimmon-just getting established in TN. Bucks won't eat them...at least most of them won't once they shed their velvet.

They're NOT muscadines I'm pretty sure they're plums. They almost have to be. I only busted one of them open and I remember one pretty large seed in the middle, and a really sweet smell. Plus, there definitely was not a vine growing up or around the tree. If you remember I mentioned there were several "trees" in the area bearing these fruits, not vines. Yes, I did look on th tree branches and see them growing from the tree itself.....I also mentioned that I didn't think they were persimmons either, which is why I posted a pic of them to begin with. We had 5 or 6 persimmon trees on our farm and these looked similar, but definitely not what I remembered.
Oh, and did I mention they're not muscadines??!!

My guess would be plums gone wild ?? What is the chance that there is a old home site somewhere in the area ??

My guess would be plums gone wild ?? What is the chance that there is a old home site somewhere in the area ??
The area which he found them is within the security fence of the Air Force base (AEDC). There is no telling what used to be where back in the days.....

Plums, persimmons, muscadines... While it would be nice to know what they are, from a deer hunting perspective it really doesn't matter. Deer will eat any of them. The question is are they eating them. If there is fresh feeding sign, then it's a good spot to hunt. My experience with soft mast is that there has to be a significant quantity of it and not many acorns around to really get the deer's attention. It's all about the sign.

If there are old home sites around, and assuming one of the homeowners started these plants, would they still be considered wild plums? Kind of like the "wildflowers" strategically planted along the interstates.

Domesticated plums that have survived or thier own could be considered wild.Some pictures to detirmine the age of the trees would be helpful in guessing age of the trees. PLenty of occupied homes in the area. A deer or squirrel could have ate some plums and planted the seeds. All of our domesticated fruits and vegatables have wild orgins before they were cross breed and cross pollinated.Many people are discovering that fruits of wild origins are much hardier and disease resistant than modern cultivars.Because it is federal land the plants are protected.
If someone had a few seeds they could very likely start some nice plum trees.

There are several old homesites on AEDC. Do these trees have reddish-purple leaves? There are several purple leaf plums growing up there and those dry leaves on the ground look like plum leaves. But plums drop in July-early August, wouldn't the fruit be gone by now?
I also know of 2 nice apple trees and a pear tree in unit 2 that fruit most every year. Trouble is several other people know about them and they always seem to get their first!
