This is pretty funny really. Everyone intends to always make perfect shots, however sometimes things go wrong. That is when a larger caliber can result in a recovered animal rather then a wounded or lost animal. Rest assured I shoot well, I also am not trying to compensate or prove anything by choosing a magnum caliber. Just trying to understand the logic

As much as I hate to say it, the .223 wasn't developed for its killing power. It was developed for wounding as it takes more combatants from the battle to remove a wounded soldier than it does to leave a dead one.
That being said, do the real light rounds kill deer? Sure. But a better answer is it depends. When hunting from a treestand, shooting blind, etc., it likely doesn't matter. When stillhunting, it is an altogether different experience most of the time and I wouldn't choose a real light, fast moving round due mainly to the close proximity of the target. I'm becoming a real fan of the 7mm-08 after hunting with my daughter's last season. Or, maybe I'm just getting old.

I do not think you or anyone else is a sissy for shooting a .223 at deer versus a heavier caliber. My earlier comment was a joke, hence the :). Only an idiot would accuse someone of being a sissy because they choose a particular caliber. Just the same as a person is an idiot if they think someone chooses a magnum caliber because it might make them feel more manly.
I personally do not feel that .223 is a good choice for deer, sure it will kill them when placed perfectly. However, like I said almost anything will kill them with a perfect shot, but sometimes things don't go perfect and that is the cases where a larger caliber might be the difference in recovering an animal versus losing one.

Shot placement is everything regardless of the caliber. I hate to admit it, but I have lost 2 good bucks with a 30/06, but have killed plenty others with 20/06, 25/06 and 243. It was my poor judgment of shot placement that cost me the deer. One shot was at a good buck "chasing a doe thru the woods at a mere 30-40 yards or so. He left a blood trail like no other, but it just faded out to nothing. The other was a good buck that was with his harem of does. I was still hunting and when I crest the top of a ridge All I saw was 3-5 does and the buck. The does spotted me, so I rushed the shot before he was in a better angle. I kick myself to this date.

illegal as heck .243 is smallest u can us in tn Seriously? Do people not read the regs anymore? Don't believe me? Go take a look in the TWRA forum, I bet 90% of those questions could be answered if the poster just read the regs.
Ture but then someone with TWRA wouldn't be busy answering the phone with Questions, not to mention that section of the board here,.....in short they would get BORED. LOL
