I know it has be a while but wanted to share this story...

Patience...the most valuable tool a hunter can have. In my case the lack of. The wife and I finally got to go hunting this past Saturday but got a late start so it turned into a mid-day hunt. Got to our stand and was really enjoying the day till a few dogs wondered by and that put question into the rest of the hunt. But just 20 min. later 2 bucks came feeding by at about 35 yards and my wife was ready but sat back down saying it was to far for her. Okay my turn...Ranged the deer and it was 45 yards okay make the shot and I did but shot low. After thinking about the shot..I ranged it at 45 but let the deer walk around the 5 foot oak tree which really made the shot 50 yards...mistake number 1. $\:\($ Watched the deer stumble off out of sight. Got down and wanted to look at the arrow and check for blood...mistake number 2. $\:\($ too soon only 5 mins. has passed. Well the arrow had very little blood on it and had a strong smell. Saw blood on the ground and it was a dark red, now I go what the heck? Lets start following the blood...mistake number 3. $\:\($ Should of would of and could of but didn't... Started tracking blood and tracked it 800 yards to a large tall thicket and started in...mistake number 4. $\:\($ Well by now you would think I had gotten smarter but no I was going to find that deer. Well we did... I saw it, it saw us , he jumed, we jumped, and I have no idea where he went. So the lesson learned which after all the years I have hunted is reguardless of what you want to do have PATIENCE...I did everything wrong and it cost me my first deer of the season.

Being patient and waiting after arrowing a deer is one of the hardest things for me to do. I can relate. Sometimes I just can't make myself wait to get down and check the arrow. It is tough to do, but it certainly pays dividends.
