I hate to contradict many on here, but you don't have persimmons in your other post.
Since that post was old, I thought I'd start a new one so you would see.
Now let me esplain it.... 
Persimmons DO NOT have a long stem that they grow on. They also have a very large "cap" on them. Sometimes (usually) that "cap" falls off with the fruit. Sometimes not. But look at the photo below. I took this of the tree in my back yard. Notice the cap and lack of a long stem holding the fruit. Also notice the small "spike" at the other end of the fruit.
Now, look at your photo below. Some of the fruit on the ground (arrowed) has a definite stem and no cap. It could NOT have shed the cap with a stem still being in place. Thus, it is NOT a persimmon. Also there is no small "spike" at the end of the fruit of yours.
Based on the dark purple color of the old fruit, most likely you have muscadine grapes (look for a vine in that tree) or possibly plums or outside chance even crabapples.
To be sure about grapes versus plums......It's REAL EASY.....open one up. Grapes have several small seeds inside. Plums have a single "pit" or "stone".

There two types of persimmons. This is male red persimmon-just getting established in TN. Bucks won't eat them...at least most of them won't once they shed their velvet. 
Some will just hold them in their mouth, then some just suck on them a little. Then they will spit the seed out.

Muscadine was my thought, too. We have a nice big bunch of the vines on my property. I guess they could be grapes. Eat one and see.

Actually Bowriter,
They are many "varieties" of persimmon. If you include all the "domesticated" types such as asian types, etc..
But only one "wild" that is native to TN. And in the persimmon trees there is a male and female "sex" if you will. But the difference in the sex does not make them different "types".
It has more to do with pollination, etc..
And typically or should I say "as known to experts". The "male" does NOT produce fruit.

Overview
Persimmon fruit trees are dioecious species, meaning that a tree will produce either male or female flowers. This differentiation is the key way to determine a tree's sex, save for the presence or lack of fruit development. This requirement calls for male and female trees to be planted in general proximity to one another to allow for cross-pollination and fruiting, usually at a rate of one male to eight female trees. Rarely, male and female persimmon trees can possess perfect flowers with both male and female parts so they can self-pollinate. However, even in this rare instance only female persimmon trees can produce fruits. Persimmons begin to flower and fruit regularly at three to six years old. Before this, determining the sex of the tree is difficult if it's not labeled.
Step 1
Look for male persimmon flowers in the spring that are clustered on the branches in groups of three and are immediately adjacent to a leaf axil.
Step 2
Check for the size of male flowers looking for those that are 1/4 to 1/3 inches in diameter versus the larger female flowers that measure 1/2 to 3/4 inches in diameter.
Step 3
Identify the unique male flower stamens protruding up through the center of the flower with 16 to 24 yellow to slightly green stamens arranged in two concentric rows. Female flowers sport just four to eight, shorter and less developed stamens.
Step 4
Observe the lack of fruit development on mature trees over three to six years of age in the summer. Male trees will not develop persimmons after bloom, while female trees will.

"The proof is in the pudding" as they say........or should we say this time.....inside the fruit.
Persimmons have several (3-6) medium sized, almond shaped (but about half the size), flatish seeds (pits) inside each fruit.
Grapes have many smallish, round seeds inside. (except for domesticated "seedless" varieties)
Plums have a single "pit" or "stone".
I have no idea what a crab apple has......maybe similar to, but smaller than, the many seeds like a regular apple has???? 
But either way, none of Baxter83's fruit have a "cap" on them like all the persimmon varities I know of have.
