I hate to contradict many on here, but you don't have persimmons in your other post.
Since that post was old, I thought I'd start a new one so you would see.
Now let me esplain it....
Persimmons DO NOT have a long stem that they grow on. They also have a very large "cap" on them. Sometimes (usually) that "cap" falls off with the fruit. Sometimes not. But look at the photo below. I took this of the tree in my back yard. Notice the cap and lack of a long stem holding the fruit. Also notice the small "spike" at the other end of the fruit.

Now, look at your photo below. Some of the fruit on the ground (arrowed) has a definite stem and no cap. It could NOT have shed the cap with a stem still being in place. Thus, it is NOT a persimmon. Also there is no small "spike" at the end of the fruit of yours.

Based on the dark purple color of the old fruit, most likely you have muscadine grapes (look for a vine in that tree) or possibly plums or outside chance even crabapples.
To be sure about grapes versus plums......It's REAL EASY.....open one up. Grapes have several small seeds inside. Plums have a single "pit" or "stone".
Hope this helps you.

There two types of persimmons. This is male red persimmon-just getting established in TN. Bucks won't eat them...at least most of them won't once they shed their velvet.
Some will just hold them in their mouth, then some just suck on them a little. Then they will spit the seed out.

Actually Bowriter,
They are many "varieties" of persimmon. If you include all the "domesticated" types such as asian types, etc..
But only one "wild" that is native to TN. And in the persimmon trees there is a male and female "sex" if you will. But the difference in the sex does not make them different "types".
It has more to do with pollination, etc..
And typically or should I say "as known to experts". The "male" does NOT produce fruit.
http://www.gardenguides.com/97730-identify-male-persimmon-trees.html Overview Persimmon fruit trees are dioecious species, meaning that a tree will produce either male or female flowers. This differentiation is the key way to determine a tree's sex, save for the presence or lack of fruit development. This requirement calls for male and female trees to be planted in general proximity to one another to allow for cross-pollination and fruiting, usually at a rate of one male to eight female trees. Rarely, male and female persimmon trees can possess perfect flowers with both male and female parts so they can self-pollinate. However, even in this rare instance only female persimmon trees can produce fruits. Persimmons begin to flower and fruit regularly at three to six years old. Before this, determining the sex of the tree is difficult if it's not labeled. Step 1 Look for male persimmon flowers in the spring that are clustered on the branches in groups of three and are immediately adjacent to a leaf axil. Step 2 Check for the size of male flowers looking for those that are 1/4 to 1/3 inches in diameter versus the larger female flowers that measure 1/2 to 3/4 inches in diameter. Step 3 Identify the unique male flower stamens protruding up through the center of the flower with 16 to 24 yellow to slightly green stamens arranged in two concentric rows. Female flowers sport just four to eight, shorter and less developed stamens. Step 4 Observe the lack of fruit development on mature trees over three to six years of age in the summer. Male trees will not develop persimmons after bloom, while female trees will.

"The proof is in the pudding" as they say........or should we say this time.....inside the fruit.
Persimmons have several (3-6) medium sized, almond shaped (but about half the size), flatish seeds (pits) inside each fruit.
Grapes have many smallish, round seeds inside. (except for domesticated "seedless" varieties)
Plums have a single "pit" or "stone".
I have no idea what a crab apple has......maybe similar to, but smaller than, the many seeds like a regular apple has????
But either way, none of Baxter83's fruit have a "cap" on them like all the persimmon varities I know of have.

Are we still talking about persimmons?

I never commented on the original post but I did not think they were persimmons! At least they don't look like any one I have ever seen but I'm no dendrologist either.

They're NOT muscadines I'm pretty sure they're plums. They almost have to be. I only busted one of them open and I remember one pretty large seed in the middle, and a really sweet smell. Plus, there definitely was not a vine growing up or around the tree. If you remember I mentioned there were several "trees" in the area bearing these fruits, not vines. Yes, I did look on th tree branches and see them growing from the tree itself.....I also mentioned that I didn't think they were persimmons either, which is why I posted a pic of them to begin with. We had 5 or 6 persimmon trees on our farm and these looked similar, but definitely not what I remembered.
Oh, and did I mention they're not muscadines??!!

The area which he found them is within the security fence of the Air Force base (AEDC). There is no telling what used to be where back in the days.....

Plums, persimmons, muscadines... While it would be nice to know what they are, from a deer hunting perspective it really doesn't matter. Deer will eat any of them. The question is are they eating them. If there is fresh feeding sign, then it's a good spot to hunt. My experience with soft mast is that there has to be a significant quantity of it and not many acorns around to really get the deer's attention. It's all about the sign.

If there are old home sites around, and assuming one of the homeowners started these plants, would they still be considered wild plums? Kind of like the "wildflowers" strategically planted along the interstates.

Domesticated plums that have survived or thier own could be considered wild. Some pictures to detirmine the age of the trees would be helpful in guessing age of the trees. PLenty of occupied homes in the area. A deer or squirrel could have ate some plums and planted the seeds. All of our domesticated fruits and vegatables have wild orgins before they were cross breed and cross pollinated. Many people are discovering that fruits of wild origins are much hardier and disease resistant than modern cultivars.Because it is federal land the plants are protected. If someone had a few seeds they could very likely start some nice plum trees.

There are several old homesites on AEDC. Do these trees have reddish-purple leaves? There are several purple leaf plums growing up there and those dry leaves on the ground look like plum leaves. But plums drop in July-early August, wouldn't the fruit be gone by now?
I also know of 2 nice apple trees and a pear tree in unit 2 that fruit most every year. Trouble is several other people know about them and they always seem to get their first!

Kinda what I've been thinking as well, but I just wanted to try and identify the fruit.
BTW I still haven't made it back out there to take pictures of the tree and leaves....

What did the bark look like? Dark and blocky = persimmon. Grayish and scaly = plum
I would be able to tell you if I could see the bark.
