I've been told in the past that the best thing you could do with a 4 wheeler is leave it running believe it or not. Supposedly the machine doesn't spook them. But shutting it off would be like pulling your car up next to a field... They usually woudnt run until you opened the door. Don't know the true merit behind this but the theory does make some sense.

I never use a 4-wheeler. Deer definitely associate them with people. My neighbor however does and when I hear him I start looking for deer leaving his property and coming onto mine :)He never saw the deer and never knew they left his side. It burns him that I am killing the mature deer that he is getting pictures of. My place is farm land his is developed only for deer with lots of food plots, pine thickets, feeders, you name it he has done it all except park the 4-wheeler. Please all my neighbors keep using 4-wheelers!!!!

Depends on the wind and the travel route that I expect (guess) the deer will be taking to get to my hunting spot. I try to park it in a location where the deer won't get downwind of it or see it. Usually works.
Also, If you're new to using a four wheeler. I'd recommend not doing anything from your ATV to harrass the deer. Don't shoot at them. Don't chase them. Don't yell to your hunting buddy, "hey, look at that deer!" The deer on my property are accustomed to me riding around to the point that I can often ride up to within 50 yards or so, cut off the engine, and watch them (if I stay motionless and downwind).
Good post, all depends on what they are conditioned to.

As Pursuit Hunter discussed, it all depends on how threatened deer feel by an ATV. If hunters in the area regularly drive close to their stand with an ATV, deer will learn to associate the ATV with danger and move away from the sound. If ATVs are not associated with danger, you can drive right past a deer and they hardly care.
I've seen properties where ATVs are not allowed for accessing stands. In those situations, deer completely ignore the ATVs when they are ridden during land maintenance projects. Yet on clubs where everybody rides an ATV to reach their stand, simply starting one up at camp will clear every food plot of deer within hearing distance.
Personally, I don't drive a vehicle closer than a 1/4 mile to my stand. I prefer to walk in. However, I'm freakishly careful about boot scent.

When I feed the deer here at the house ,I have on my work blues
and I can almost walk up to them.
If I walk out to go back in the woods hunting with Camo on
they run like they have been shot at.
As far as 4 wheelers I have watched them eating and just all the sudden take off for the woods.
A few minutes later here comes a 4 wheeler or truck

my dads farm is mostly open farm land and from one stand i can see my 4-wheeler even though it is about 400yds away and parked just inside the tree line and i can't tell you how many deer i have seen standing within a few yards of it.
i have killed some real nice bucks that passed within 20yds or so of it. now i have had some deer spook and start snorting because of it also.

I usually have a pretty long walk to majority of my stands. A rule of thumb I go by is cutting it in half to make it a little easier

I don't think it is a good idea to drive one in to hunt at all. They are nice for retreival. I believe that a mature deer will not ignore the sound of a 4 wheeler like younger ones may. You can kill deer in general, but I think it hurts your chances at mature deer. If it can potentially hurt your chances, why do it if you are able bodied?
