I arrived at my stand at 3:00 sharp today. I was planning on being there by 2:30, but I got held up on the approach. This is the first time I've hunted this property this year (trying to back off on this property to a handful of hunts). The entire property is a bedding area and due to the unusually dry leaves, I had to creep/stalk on the 1/4th mile approach (shortest approach I have for any stand). I spent 30 minutes tiptoeing through the woods.
Anyway, climbed the tree and hauled my bow up and layed it across my lap to screw in my bow hanger. I look up and two bucks walk in and start feeding on acorns. I had two respectable bucks standing broadside at 10 yards and didn't have my release on or a arrow knocked, nor could I risk the movement necessary to be ready for a shot. Had I been there 2 minutes earlier, there would have been a different outcome.
The two bucks fed for 20 minutes and then headed back into the thicket. I didn't see anything else the rest of the afternoon. Remember: get there earlier then you think you should be! This is the 2nd time I have seen significant feeding activity during midday this season.

this is exactly why i put my release on at the truck, never know what you will run across while walking in or just sitting down in the stand. just bend it back and tuck it into your shirt sleeve and you forget its on your wrist...
