Of course I know that there are a lot of variables that come into play.....first being temperature, but in the fall when the days are mid 60's to mid 70's, how often do they drink on average. Everyday?

That is a great question. I hope someone chimes in that has a good answer to this. Where I hunt, it is as dry as I have ever seen it. Hasn't rained in forever. We do have a pond on our property and I have thought about putting a stand near it.

deer get a lot of their hydration needs supplied through the succulent browse and food sources soaked with morning dew that they eat. However they will frequent water holes.
especially now since most of us haven't had any measureable rainfall in several weeks, there really isn't anything succulent.
this was part of the accentuation of the 2007 EHD outbreak. That was a bad drought scenario and it forced animals to drink from ponds where consequently the culicodes varipennis was waiting in the surrounding mud flats of those watering ponds.
I have noticed more activity along the perennial spring fed stream next to our house as of last few weeks. Deer are basically camped out around the streams. Plus we have a few Chinese chestnut trees that seem to be holding them in the area too.
if you have an old cattle pond with water still in it, it might be a good set up.

Every day! Now where & how they get it that's the question. With the drought like it is I would be set up close to water, although many are night drinkers only.

Deer get the vast majority of their water needs from the plants they eat. Deer CAN survive in environments that have no standing water, although they will certainly seek it out of it is available.

I dont think that would be baiting, but by the time the deer get used to a "big new barrel" sitting there and especially having the nuts to walk up to it, there will be a rain by then and they wouldnt have to worry about it. It would be a waste of time IMO. I would focus more on food than water. Actually, (something odd I just thought of), I have never seen a deer drinking water in my entire life.....except when I have been on a lake fishing and seen a deer come down to the edge
.....just my thoughts
