What kind of tree/fruit is this???????

I found a tree dropping these little fruits the other day. I didn't take a picture of the trees, but they were small (maybe 8" diameter) with a semi rough bark and are growing right in the middle of a natural drainage ditch in the middle of the woods. I thought it was some kind of persimmons, but I thought they were a lot bigger and looked a little different.

Look like persimmons to me also...did they taste like persimmons?

I thought they were a lot bigger and looked a little different.
They turn that purplish/black color once they ripen.

I wasn't 100% so I didn't put one of them in my mouth.... . It did smell really sweet like on though. The only thing that had me in doubt was the size of them. I haven't seen any since I hunted on our old farm in 07'.
