I almost never head for my stand until I can see to shoot. I hunt my way in and out and have killed several deer both ways. The shorter time I sit there, the shorter time for my scent to pool around me. Three years ago, I killed a doe as I was slipping in and killed a second doe as I was slipping out. I guess I had them coming and going Didn't see a thing out of my stand.
That's a odd tactic. Statically, you would stand a much better chance from a tree stand than stalking. Who's to say that you have missed more opportunities from your tree than opportunities made stalking at 1st and last light? To each his own.
IMO:
As for getting to and from your stand, deer feel less threatened when its dark, so any spooking you do will have less consequence than at day light. Often times, you will inevitably spook some deer, whether you know it or not. By arriving early, you allow time for them to feel comfortable again before shooting light. -similar philosophy for departure: you should wait until it is completely dark, which means you'll be sitting 30-45+ minutes beyond shooting light.
Arrive early, stay late, and hunt high.

Poser-I think you misuderstood. I don't stalk. I just walk slowly using the exact same trail I would at dark. I sometimes have an arrow nocked and almost always shoot instinctively. When you "stalk" you become a predator to a deer. When you just walk slowly, you are just someone walking slowly. Deer are not particularly afraid of man. They are afraid of man the predator. I learned that a great many years ago and have used it to my advantage on several occasions.

This tactic may work on a short approach then. I'm usually hauling a$% for the first 1/2 mile. After that, I slow down and will move into a more stealth mode 1/4th mile out./ On the last few hundred yards, I will move as quietly as possible.
I tend to disagree with a lot of people's tactics on here, but seems to be often the case that they (the person with I disagree with) are exclusively hunting private lands where my tactics are based almost exclusively on public lands and/or highly pressured (in some cases extremely pressured) deer. So, my new stance is, if you can get away with what you are doing, more power to you. BUT if it works for highly pressured deer, then it definitely works on "managed" and/or unpressured deer. However the opposite scenario is not necessarily true.

Many deer tend to bed or get back to their core areas much earlier on Public ground like LBL or at least that is what I have found. Getting there on days like tomorrow may work a bit better because my scent should move out more quickly due to the wind. I've even had deer move to me in the dark in order to find out what the commotion is and on those occasions I can see where getting there right at light would help a bit. For the most part the deer seem to be long gone if I spook them at first light so I try to go in much earlier. It seems to calm the woods down as well.
