For the last two or three years, I have spent a considerable amount of money on deer hunting. I've bought stands, paid for dozer work, food plots, etc. I am a college student, and money doesn't grow on trees in my family. I work two and three jobs all summer long so that I won't have to work all winter so I can hunt and fish. My family owns ~250 acres, split into 4 farms or tracts basically. I do all my hunting on this land along with my brother and one cousin. They help out some, but I put much more money, and usually time and work into preparing than the two of them. Both of them have killed a couple good deer.

Now for the problem. My cousin was raised by an old school deer hunter who never let any deer walk. While he tries to be different, it's apparently just in his blood to shoot any deer with horns. There is nothing wrong with that, but he is hunting my land, on which I set the rules. 3 and a half or it walks, no matter how big or small it's headgear is. This evening he shot at a deer right at dark. It was apparently so dark he couldn't tell if it had horns or how big it was, or so he says. I asked if it could be one of the two 130 plus inch deer we have pics of, and he says he has no idea. He looked for it tonight with no sign whatsoever. No blood, no arrow. He tried to lie at first and say he wasn't sure what it was, knowing it was a buck, but probably not a shooter. If he honestly couldn't tell, then it was too dark to shoot anyway. Either way, I'm sick of it. It's not fair for me to do so much work, only to have other people kill all the deer and take bad shots at non shooter bucks. I love my cousin to death, and always will, but I'm sick and tired of putting in so much effort for nothing. What can I do?

Who owns the land? In one place you said your family, in another you referred to it as "my land." If he has equal right to the land as you, there is nothing you can do. If you own the land, you can kick him off.

Its hard doing business with famiy, good luck. I would set the rules to be equal money of a certain value and time or its a no go. My brother is the same way... he's a freeloader, I got tired of it and stopped hunting with him.

Listen...I know how you feel. But, a close friend and cousin is not worth losing over deer hunting. I am as much of deer hunting fanatic as anyone, but I would recommend you just let him kill what he wants and enjoy the time with your cousin. Him killing one or two young bucks every year is not going to decimate your herd. Continue to educate him along, keep telling him it's best to let the little bucks walk...he will probably (hopefully) catch on after awhile.

Your only other choice is to tell him "sorry, but if you can't go by my rules, you can't hunt". Depending on the type person he is, that could evoke any number of responses from him.

Ultimately you have to make a choice if you can bear putting up the time and cost and your cousin killing whatever he wants or not. You would certainly be in your right (imo) to tell him your not taking him anymore until he obeys the rules and helps with the work/money. Hope it all works out for you.

I'd tell him the rules and be polite but firm. I'd also explain the management practice you use and the rewards of it. Start our with "I don't want to hurt our relationship but this is how things have got to be". If he's a good guy he'll understand.

Yep, put the rules in writing and have him sign off, when he breaks the rules he's not allowed to hunt it anymore.
