In a continual effort to bring you the finest in hunting forum entertainment, I submit the first contestant for the 2010 Homemade Treestand Beauty Pageant:

Location: WMA in Middle Tennessee
I noticed this fine piece of work back in turkey season and walked out of my way to photograph it on Saturday morning. I suspect that this may be leftover from before this land was a WMA, but who knows... some enterprising, young feller may have dragged this ladder in from the closest public access, .79 miles away. Or, maybe he constructed it on site.
Anyway, the limb is hardly 5 feet off the ground. I could easily wrap a arm around the limb, throw a leg up over it and roll up there without the aid of a ladder. From a tactical perspective, there is very little, if any advantage this tree stand offers at a height of 5 feet. While there are several game trails in front of this stand, the primary trail is only 4 yards away. Unlikely that you would get away with any movement to make a shot while sitting or standing on this limb (not sure which was the creator's intention). Furthermore, there is no way to get to the tree without crossing numerous game trails and, to add to the problems, there is a fence row thicket directly behind this tree that is a popular bedding area, so wind in your face will be blowing directly through a bedding area and into the primary food (crop field) source 30 yards further.
Scoring on a 10 pt scale:
Tactical advantage: 1 Location: 2 Originality: 1 Aesthetic value: 3
Total score on the Poser scale (out of 40 potential points): 7

I've got one on my place that has been there for at least 35-40 years!

If I ever go into an area cold I look for old stands to help guide my search. Someone built them there for some reason...

I find that many old stands are based on archaic hunting philosophies or no philosophy at all other than the tree be accommodating to homemade stands.

I got one to top that, but it's in Alabama and I don't have a photo. Some jackleg had built a rickety-lookin' homemade tripod stand directly on top of a 55 gal drum corn feeder. Next time I'm there, I'll try to get a photo. Oh, baiting is illegal in AL.

Now, that's what I'm talking about! Wait until I bring back some Mississippi pics. With a NE wind this weekend, I'll be hunting close to a stand I've seen before. Its a 55 gallon drum that has the top 1/3rd removed, bolted to the side of a tree! I've also seen a shooting house with a rotten piece of carpet for a roof. But, alas, it doesn't count unless you bring a photo.

One more comment on this ladder: With 1 tree spike, the creator could have accomplished what this ladder achieves!
