Contrary to what some people would like you to believe, arrows don't shoot through bone.
I have had my bear heads bust out the rib bones on both sides for a complete pass thru before,...then again, I have had them not do it too...every shot is unique...

You should definitely be getting a pass thru on most good shoots, because ideally you want the deer broadside atleast to some degree. And as for shooting through bone, especially ribs, with a good quality fixed blade head, that is very sharp, you should not have much trouble! For example, my 12 yr old Son, who is currently pulling a whopping 37 lbs, and shooting a 75 grn 2 blade cut on contact BH, got a complete pass thru at 20 yards on Saturday morning on his first Bow deer. It was perfectly broadside and the arrow was slightly sticking in the leaves where the deer was standing upon impact! I pull 72 lbs myself and have had no trouble breaking atleast enough bone to get the job done, for example I shot a 267 lb live weight 10 pt at 28 yards. I shot a little far forward hitting him square in the on side shoulder, which it broke right thru and was actually completely buried in the offside shoulder with the tip of the 100 grn Thunderhead sticking thru the hide. While I didnt get a complete pass thru with the entire arrow, the BH did in fact break a shoulder and pass completely thru, even the offside shoulder bone! My point being, if your equipment is all in tune, which can be very important, as if the arrow is not flying like a dart, you will lose much of its energy in flight, you should be getting great penetration and pass thrus most times with 70 lbs of pull on deer size game. Are you maybe shooting really light arrows and or BH's? Do they fly straight? etc.

That is THE key element there, that will affect the efficiancy EVERY shot taken....

I have no idea about it being in tune. I can group shots in a softball size area from 10 and 20 yds and maybe little bigger at 30. The bow says 70# (written in) I'm pretty sure. I got it used so who knows. I have a feeling its my broad heads. Would a dull bh affect the shot that much?

you should be shooting pass throughs. i shoot 70lbs with sharp fixed blades (slick tricks, 100gr.) and killed one saturday. double lung shot that went through two ribs and stuck 2 inches deep into a tree on the other side of the deer. the only time i do not get pass through is if i hit too far forward and hit the shoulders.

My advice would be to go to a good bow shop and have them check everything, from the poundage, to paper tuning the bow, to tuning your arrows with broadheads, to sharpening the BH's. Just have them check everything out, you may be surprised what they find!

I think the answer is simple. If you are pulling 70lbs and a broadhead(assuming new and sharp) and dont get a passthru then there is only one reason. You are hitting bone. Contrary to what some people would like you to believe, arrows don't shoot through bone. It deflects and zaps all the energy from the arrow. You may poke a hole in a scapula but that is about it.
Agree completely...
with the caveat that you are probably hitting bone on the offside. An arrow can certainly penetrate scapula/rib on the near side, but then won't have enough energy to completely passthru. Alternatively, you can hit behind the scapula/humerous on the near side then the farside can stop the arrow on a quartering away shot.
