Saturday morning, I did something that I have never done. Other than forget my safety harness, that is.
While sitting in front of my computer looking at weather.com, I began looking for an excuse NOT to go deer hunting on OPENING DAY!!!!!! The question was...DO I REALLY WANT TO GO?
Bad wind direction, warm temps, plenty of time during the season, all seemed like sufficent excuses to NOT go.
BUT, THIS WAS OPENING DAY, THE DAY THAT WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING ON!!!!!!! I have not missed an opening day in well over 30 years!!!!
Actually, I waited until the last possible moment before making my decision.
Twenty-five minutes later, I was presented with another question.
As I sat in my deer stand trying to calm down after getting "blown up" by a deer in the dark, I sat as still as I could and just listened.
I could hear some yard dogs barking ,probably a mile or more away.
I heard a train come through in the distance and a bird deciding that he wanted to be the first voice of the day.
As the sun began to lighten things abit, a squirrel came across the top of my tree and made his way to feed or maybe back to nest after a moonlit night of feeding. The sky was just barely light enough to catch it's silouette as it did so.
The light breeze caught some honeysuckle or maybe some sort of fruit tree and sweetened the air.
Around the time that the forest floor became visible, it also became alive. A skunk, three coons and a variety of birds paraded past my location. Countless movement and sounds surrounded me. I was consumed.
I didn't feel like some old man sitting on a park bench watching the world go by. Instead I felt like a kid in front of Macy's, sitting on my dad's shoulders watching the parade go by.
It was at that moment that I realized that the second question was..."How could you miss this?".......the answer was..."I could not".
Good luck guys and enjoy every moment.....

Man, you just summed up why I love the outdoors. Can't experience that feeling on the couch.
