once again with the assumptions... when i carried my rifle into the woods today, and shot two coyotes, i did so with a 17hmr.
if someone was going to poach a deer, why would they wait until archery season opens? if they risk using a prohibited weapon don't you think they would risk shooting out of season as well. and before everyone jumps my sh**, im just playing devils advocate here.

Hard to take a deer to a processor before the season ...or even put one in the freezer yourself without a tag......
many places tag deer without ever looking at them and many processors could not care any less how you killed the deer...
it's one thing to take a deer by illegal means, but once it's tagged and processed, there is no evidence of anything illegal...
I knew guys (one died and the other quit hunting)that hunted every bow season with rifles and never got caught.....they owned their own processing plant and they were a check in station as well....very convenient.
One single shot at first light makes me think that no one is sighting in a rifle that early or with just one shot...two or more (single) shots from different directions make me come to the conclusion that more than one hunter was out there with a rifle a bit early...
But, I could be wrong........lol.

We heard only one the whole weekend... Well besides all the ones we always hear from the Columbia gun club. Don't make sense to me why they wouldn't just learn bow. Online check ins endorsing poaching?

In Haywood County, we only have one warden....to my knowledge.
What's the odds of him hearing your shot and checking it out? What's the odds of getting checked by one warden in such a big county, especially if you are well away from where he likely rides and looks (the Hatchie Bottom area).
I know guys that (after check-in)skin and quarter up their deer eveb before they take them to the processor.....to save some money or to hide a gunshot wound...hmmm????
Sadly, there are plenty of unethical hunters out there .....
proud NOT to be one of them...

I have often skint and guarterd a deer before checkin it out...didn't mean I had anything to hide tho...it just meant it was to hot to risk spoilage...
