Opening morning, I was walking to my stand and just as I was about 50 yards out, I heard a loud BLOW and a dozen or so heavy THUD PRINTS (as I call them).....sadly, I proceeded to the stand and saw nothing the rest of the morning.
As I sat there for almost four hours talking to the squirrels and listening to distant rifle fire (not sure at what, lol), I thought about all the times I had heard deer blow and began wondering something....
Has anyone ever come up with some logical way to determine what is blowing at you ? OR, at least, give it a pretty accurate guess.
For example. Many times deer have run from my location blowing many, many times while doing so. I have had them blow as many as 20 times as they made their way through the woods. Other times, they may blow once or twice and that's it. I've watched bucks blow once and run, and then I've seen a few bucks blow repeatedly.
I've seen does not blow at all, but just either turn and run or slowly back out and leave, the same with some bucks.
I've often wondered as I sit and listen to distant deer blowing, just what they were. Buck, doe, momma doe with young ones...etc.
I've heard deer blow so much that I never thought they were ever going to shut up...lol. AND, I've watched them blow once and that's about it....
Would you think it would have more to do with the individual deer, more to do with the situation (what spooked them) or more to do with whether they are alone or in a group like maybe a momma and her family group...?
any thoughts?

Deer are very much like women. Some talk only when they really have something to say. They say it then shut up. Those are the real valuable women. Others talk just to make noise and they never shut up. Those are the ones to cull because all they do is irritate folks.
Deer are the same way. A deer that blows repeatedly has no idea what it is blowing at. Ot just likes the sound of its own air.

Next time one blows and it has not seen you, try blowing back. If something like a sound spooks them, and they do not know what you are, you can fool them into thinking you are another deer. I have had deer walk back to me after they have blown at the noise i was making walking in when i blew back. It doesn't always work, but its worth a shot.

One morning I heard "blowing" from a long way off...it kept getting louder and louder....wasn't long before 2 does came crashing thru the brush to my left, with a buck hot on their tails, about 40yds behind...couldn't really tell whether it was the buck, or the does that were doing all the "blowing", but I think it was the does...it appeared to me that they wanted no part of the buck.
That right there got me to thinking that deer "blow" for different reasons....not necessarily because they percieve danger.

In my experience, deer do not run toward other deer that are blowing since it's an alarm sound.

i have a call in my pocket for that very reason. if they are blowing, most likely they aren't sure what spooked them.
