Ive been scouting some recently, and haven't found many acorns, but I have found two locations that have some rubs. One place is in a creek bottom coming out of a long winding thicket. There is a rub line made up of just a few small diameter trees coming out of the thicket.

The other location has quite a few rubs that seem to have been made with some determination, all of which are concentrated in a fifty yard stretch. Some are saplings, a couple are small cedars, and a few, pecil-like saplings have been shredded and broken in half.

Do these rubs offer any information, besides that there are bucks in the area with rising testosterone? Are bucks of all ages just as likely to rub early on? Are early season rub lines good areas to hunt?

Early rubs, especially on larger diameter trees, are generally the sign of older bucks. At this time, young bucks are conducting little rubbing and when they do it is usually small-diameter saplings and half-hearted rubbing.

I just found where a buck ripped one of my ornamental maple trees to shreds last night right in my front yard in Nashville. Definitely an older buck and he darn near killed the tree.

Deer aren't territorial.

I believe that at this time of year bucks are rubbing small trees 'cause they want to, not because they are trying to communicate with other deer. Whether they "want to" in order to get the feel of their newly-hardened antlers, or to exercise their necks, or just to feel superior is anyone's guess. What I've noticed is that where you find concentrations of small rubs is in areas where bucks are relaxed and spending time. I'd be surprised if there wasn't something nearby that they were feeding on.

Two things I have learned from you Bryan: do not plant roses or maples in or around Nashville.

One of the bucks i got on camera very near to the rub line is a 2.5 yrs. bascket rack 8 pointer who already has a broken off G-2. I also got a pic of him charging at a raccoon. I think he may have an attitude problem, lol. I can very easily see him taking out some aggression on those little saplings. Hopefully he isn't the only one doing the rubbing!

Shagee is dead...wrong. Bucks could care less about territory. Rubs this time of year mean only one thing...a buck did it unless you have porcupines.

The crazy thing is, the tree had a paper wrapper around the trunk. The buck didn't care. He shredded the paper wrapper, strewing pieces of it all over the yard.

Rubs this time of year simply tell you where a buck may be traveling or spending some time. Can be valuable info for some hunters.
