After hunting South Dakota for the last 4 years, I have more of these stories than I can remember. One from last fall, everyone had been seeing a huge buck (200") living in the middle of a CRP field. He would show up every other day or so and show off from 400 yards away. We knew he was big because the road hunters were out in full force with spotting scopes on windows everytime we came out of our stands. One particular morning I was sitting in the "barn stand" with my father in law, over looking about 150 yards worth of river bottom with 100 acres of alfalfa on the other side. He showed him self coming over the ridge of the CRP fixing to drop into the alfalfa. We were both shaking at the chance we might get a shot. All of a sudden he spooked and bolted out of site as 2 coyotes trotted across the river bottom. We were so dishearted. We returned that afternoon for an uneventful hunt. As we departed the barn, we slid the door shut and glassed the ridge of CRP. There he stood. All 200" of him. On the very tip top of the ridge, completely backlit by the red-orange sunset. He was truly a monster. It was a sight I will never forget, that huge deer and rack, just a shadow against that sunset.

Saw a true bruit in Ohio, coming on a trial straight to me... he disappeared at 85 yards. He showed up again, behind me, that evening. He was trailing a doe, grunting with ever step he took. The doe went to jump the fence and got hung up, how amazing is that? The buck got spooked by her predicament and froze just a couple of steps out of bow range.
Another, opening day of MZ in 2006, sitting with my bow on my lap. A monster 10 pointer stood broadside at 50 yards, straight in front of my tree! It is often that I think of how beautiful he was.
Last, I arrowed a large buck at LBL in 2007. Hit him low and ended up blood-tracking him for a mile (by the map). He walked right into the lake. I think about him often too!
How depressing is this post! Yuck!!!
