I move more than I should, could be why I did not kill a deer last year!
Opening morning last year, been in the double stand since about 5:30. About 9:00 I decide to prop my leg up on the shooting rail. 45 seconds later three does walk in front of me at about 20 yards. I am stuck, can't draw my bow like that. As soon as I tried to get my leg down they all busted me. Learned my lesson the hard way!

I shot my best KY 8pt at just 10 yards on the ground by doing just that- moving just the same speed as he was walking, while I raised the MZ

Over the years I've gotten away with movement simply because of the heights I like to hunt.20 ft.or higher.I usually keep the limit to 25. Because of the movement used in bowhuntng I found that anything less than 18 feet, your gonna get busted alot more than you should. I realize alot of folks won't go that high, it's a matter of choice, but heights never bothered me because I spent 17 years going up telephone poles with hooks, and alot of those heights are at least 18 ft. or better. There is an issue of the angles of shooting at those kinds of heights, but I'd rather deal with that, and making shots on calm deer than shooting a deer on alert because of catching your scent or movement.

A deer's nose is amazing, but their ability to pick up movement is nearly as amazing, even on windy days. A deer has grown up thru alot of windy days, and it seems they can pick out unnatural movement, even with the leaves and limbs moving.
A deer's eye is specifically designed to notice movement. In fact their eye is extremely unique in that they have an entire band of "motion sensors" that cover a strip across their vision from side to side, even into their peripheral vision. Then consider that the placement of their eyes on the sides of their head produces a vision arc of 340 degrees (they can see everything except a small sliver blind spot directly behind their head).

340 degrees...thats amazing.
Well Im going to try and tone down my moving. But through this discussion and my experience here is what I have come to believe:
-they are especially prone to catch you if you hunt the same places year after year. -height helps -unobtrusive stands like hang ons and climbers are probably a little better -cover in the tree is very important.
Finally as a bow hunter, ligher draw weight is helpful. To reduce struggle/movement

A deer on the move wont see movement nearly as well as a motionless deer either. You can get away with much more if the deer is moving vs standing still for sure! I also agree the higher you are the more you can get away with!

Very good point Winchester.

Agreed. The portion of a deer's eye specifically designed to detect movement is a narrow band from side to side aligned with the horizon. In essence, as a deer looks out into the distance, everything along the horizon is sharply defined and highly sensative to movement. But the farther above or below the horizon an object is, the less sensative a deer's eye will be to that object moving. Get far above the horizon and your movement is less likely to be noticed by a deer.
