Just been pondering this. I dont get busted for moving...that I know of. But I move a significant amount. Sitting to standing, turning, leaning forward to put my back in a different position etc. I just wondered what importance you put on movement in stand (especially with good cover). This time of year through first of Nov. I typically hear deer before I can see them anyways.

So how much do you move?

X2...I think it may be due to ground hunting for so long as I think you could get away with a little more movement in the tree.

On absolutely freezing cold mornings, I've been known to climb down from my stand and do jumping jacks in a creek bed to get the blood flowing.

I move some. Gotta stand and stretch every few hours. Then there's turning your heads to noises. And arm movement from dippin and spittin in a bottle.

As little as humanly possible. I've gotten careless before and turned to scan the area just a little too fast, and WHAM! Busted! Heck, I've stayed till dark before on several occassions, thinking there wasn't a deer within 100yds of me and start to move to get out of the stand, and I'm talking about just minimal moving, and hear the all too familiar "blow" as the deer that were coming in behind me headed out to parts unknown!

I am the same way I move all the time while i'm on stand. I can't say that my movement has ever cost me a deer. But I do a lot of movement on stand just not very often. I will lean back and forth to look around the tree, and I will re-position myself ever so often, but other than that all I ever do is move my head to look to the left and right.

Ok maybe i should be more clear when i say i move around all the time...i normally just do some scootin around on the seat to reposition myself to be more comfortable. I also strech a little to get the blood flow, cause I have been sittin in an awkward position before and had deer run right up on me outta nowhere n miss because i couldn't get situated for the shot....

Just because you don't know you got busted doesn't mean deer haven't turned and quietly left. I have seen them turn and leave and never hear a sound. If I wouldn't have spotted them never would have known they was ever there.

I'm like that. I can't sit still long. It's all I can do to sit til 9 am in the stand. I have to get down and start moving, otherwise I get bored and restless.

Due to a bad back, I move a lot. It all depends on how and when you move.

LOL \:\) I too have gotten down and done jumping jacks. I even got down and built a small fire once...killed a deer about an hour later.

Depends on the habitat I am hunting. When hunting a field, grassland or other opening where I expect to see the deer in a certain place, I move very little. When hunting some nasty thick woods, I move my head a lot more often, mainly looking over my shoulders. Deer, especially stealthy mature deer, can slip by very easily without hardly making any detectable noise. I think the key to moving is "slow and steady." I often times hunt 25' so that may help as well.

As little as possible, even keep my hand movements concealed to in front of my body when possible. Never jerk your head when you noise either, slow fluid movements are critical.

i try to pick stand locations that will allow me to get away with more movement and most places i hunt deer can come from anywhere so i have to move around to spot them

i try to use my ears instead of looking around all the time but when every critter in the woods is running around i stay busy anyways

Exactly. You can move head, body, arms and hands considerable distances without being busted as long as you move them very, very slowly, and in a fluid motion with no sudden jerks.

Way too much. I move around more than most kids, just can't sit still. However I'm careful to slowly look around to see if anything is around before moving. I can't recall off the top of my head if I've ever been busted with these un-necessary for movements, and I've killed a few deer.

Bowguy84, deer bust you more often than you realize. What you don't account for is how many deer have seen you that you never heard. They may not know that you are a human or what the deal is, but I'm a firm believer that they can see movement from distance and avoid it.

When I first started hunting I moved alot. And saw few. Now in a less populated environment I see so many more and stay almost completely still except when I smoke. Even then I will put my hand next to my mouth and only move 1-inches ata time

One more thing... If I do move... It is a very very slow process. The guys that got me better at hunting were being over dramatic when they showed me how slow to move on stand, not realizing they were being funny, I took it very seriously. Kinda funny but i really think it does work! It takes me an average of 1 1/2 minutes to pick up my bottle to take a drink and put it down.

How long to get your weapon up to shoot ? If it takes another 1 and a half to put your bottle down then another 2 or 3 to get your bow up, another min to get it drawn, the deer will prolly be gone. Might not have spooked one but have you ever had one walk off before getting your weapon ready? lol just aggravating

Hahaha no when I know the deer is there I can see when it puts it's head down or turns the other direction... Then I get my weapon ready. My comment was referring to when I'm just sitting there with no deer in sight.

A deer's nose is amazing, but their ability to pick up movement
is nearly as amazing, even on windy days. A deer has grown up
thru alot of windy days, and it seems they can pick out unnatural
movement, even with the leaves and limbs moving.

I try to move like they do in the TV shows.....You know turning around around 2 or 3 times to face the camera talking about the deer that they continually wave their arms pointing at while it's 50 yards away. I figured if they can do it and kill deer I can too.... \:D

Seriously, I get up and stretch every once in a while. That's usually when I see flags and hear them blow. \:D

I move more than I should, could be why I did not kill a deer last year!

Opening morning last year, been in the double stand since about 5:30. About 9:00 I decide to prop my leg up on the shooting rail. 45 seconds later three does walk in front of me at about 20 yards. I am stuck, can't draw my bow like that. As soon as I tried to get my leg down they all busted me. Learned my lesson the hard way!

I shot my best KY 8pt at just 10 yards on the ground by doing just that- moving just the same speed as he was walking, while I raised the MZ

Over the years I've gotten away with movement simply because of the heights I like to hunt.20 ft.or higher.I usually keep the limit to 25. Because of the movement used in bowhuntng I found that anything less than 18 feet, your gonna get busted alot more than you should. I realize alot of folks won't go that high, it's a matter of choice, but heights never bothered me because I spent 17 years going up telephone poles with hooks, and alot of those heights are at least 18 ft. or better. There is an issue of the angles of shooting at those kinds of heights, but I'd rather deal with that, and making shots on calm deer than shooting a deer on alert because of catching your scent or movement.

A deer's eye is specifically designed to notice movement. In fact their eye is extremely unique in that they have an entire band of "motion sensors" that cover a strip across their vision from side to side, even into their peripheral vision. Then consider that the placement of their eyes on the sides of their head produces a vision arc of 340 degrees (they can see everything except a small sliver blind spot directly behind their head).

340 degrees...thats amazing.

Well Im going to try and tone down my moving. But through this discussion and my experience here is what I have come to believe:

-they are especially prone to catch you if you hunt the same places year after year.
-height helps
-unobtrusive stands like hang ons and climbers are probably a little better
-cover in the tree is very important.

Finally as a bow hunter, ligher draw weight is helpful. To reduce struggle/movement

A deer on the move wont see movement nearly as well as a motionless deer either. You can get away with much more if the deer is moving vs standing still for sure! I also agree the higher you are the more you can get away with!

Very good point Winchester.

Agreed. The portion of a deer's eye specifically designed to detect movement is a narrow band from side to side aligned with the horizon. In essence, as a deer looks out into the distance, everything along the horizon is sharply defined and highly sensative to movement. But the farther above or below the horizon an object is, the less sensative a deer's eye will be to that object moving. Get far above the horizon and your movement is less likely to be noticed by a deer.
