If your going North or the Mid-west this year hunting. Check out the states that have been added by the TWRA as cwd states. Theres another expense to add to my hunting trip this year.
May have to learn how to skin/prep. the hide for mounting before I go. I have always skinned the deer and left the complete skull with the cape. With this law 1. no bones with meat, 2. skull plate has to be cleaned with no flesh left on it. 3. teeth have to be cleaned. 4. hide has to be flesh free also.

If you know where you are going, call around to taxidermist in the area. We did this in Nebraska last year. It was a woman but come highly recommended by my friends up there.

She was very nice and said she would do them immediately upon getting them and prep the hide for us for $75. Sounds high but well worth it imho to know it was done right and everything was ready for the ride home.

She even said if we killed the last evening to call her and she would do them that night or early the next morning for us.

Practice caping a few does this year in TN... it's easy once you've done one, and you'll be able to do your own if you ever make a backpacking trip out west in the future.

Heck, I carried a scalpel, bone saw, and fine knife blades in my backpack on my last elk hunting trip. Had I shot my big bull, there was no way I was packing out 80-90lbs of skull, hide, and antlers intact. I would have just caped the animal then sawed off the skull plate with antlers and toted them out (probably 45lbs)
