The moon has nothing to do with the rut timing!

Ok, for those of you that do believe in the rutting moon, I have a question. The rutting moon is the second full moon after the fall equinox (First day of fall). Well, this year the calendar says the first day of fall is September 23rd. And my calendar says there is a full moon on September 23rd. I always thought that the first day of fall was on September 21st. Is there any chance that the rutting moon could be in November this year instead of December???

Yeah, Charlie's the main pusher of the idea. But a bunch of the top research scientist put all of their fetal conception date data together a few years ago and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that breeding in any one given location occurs at the same time every year. If the moon drove breeding, peak breeding dates would shift around by as much as a month from year to year. The fetal conception date data showed--for each given location--peak breeding fell around the same date every year, give or take a day or two.

In addition, if peak breeding was driven by the full moon, everywhere in the country would have about the same peak breeding date, yet peak breeding dates occur throughout the fall and winter months depending on the geographic location. In some areas late September, in others October, still others November or December and in the Deep South as late as late January or early March.

The Autumnal Equinox always falls on either the 22nd or 23rd, depending on exact timing. It can be late in the day on the 22nd or early in the day on the 23rd.

Full moon hits the 21st which will make the end of the rut suck for movement but bucks cruising for the last doe or two might draw them out.

In past years, I would really look forward to it but with no late mzl now, I guess I'll get the bow out.

I would much rather hunt a full moon then a new moon, just my own personal experiences but almost every single one of my mature bucks has come within a 3 days either side of a full moon or on the full moon. I plan every one of my out of town rut trips to coincide with the full moon, and it has served me extremely well for a very long time now.

I firmly believe that the rut has zero to do with the moon. The rut in any given location IMO is far more dependent on what has happened for decades and generally falls during the same period every year, no matter what the moon or weather has to say.

Personally, I think the rut happens during roughly the same week from year to year. In my experience, the weather determines how much of this activity we get to see. If you have cool, crisp days you are likely to see deer anytime. If it's too warm, then you get the nighttime activity. I Prefer the week just before this peak when the bucks are out cruising almost in desperation looking for that first hot doe. Again, cool weather at this time means deer anytime during the day. Many times, completely oblivious to whats about to happen to them...

Same here, I think Weather has a much bigger influence on daytime deer movement during the Rut, which I also think happens within a few days of the same date each year. Now their can be some exceptions to the rule. For instance the myriad of problems we had in 07, from the late freeze, to the drought, to the huge EHD die off, to the month late leaf drop, etc. This can, will, and did cause a lot of things to be off, and it took a couple years actually to get everything back to normal IMO. Matter of fact with any luck this may be our first Fall that sees everything back on a normal track, IMO anyway!
