I would never write a letter. It will always increase your chances if they see you in person. Always look respectable when you go ask. Land owners don't want a hoodlum running around on their land.

A single friend once told me that when he goes out, if he asks 100 women to go home with him and 99 say no, it was still a successful evening.

I ask just about everyone I meet. Usually just normal small talk that eventually gets around to hunting (bow hunting specifically) that may lead into them having deer around their house or family members that own large tracts. If you approach it the right way you can be hunting on somebodies 3 acre yard that has a perfect funnel on it and deer that are never hunted. You'll hear more "I don't think so's" than yes but in the end its worth it... hence the 100 women comment.
