I learned today that Iowa is a shotgun and muzzleloader state. A centerfire rifle can be used in the southern part and certain centerfire pistols allowed all over. Since my job is transferred there, that's my new hunting state!
Anyone have any ideas on slug guns?

I don't have a clue. I would just stick with a muzzleloader if it were me.

Get you a TC Encore and get you a 460 S&W Magnum 20" Katahdin barrel. A 200 gr Hornady FTX bullet chronos 2832 fps. You will be good to 250 yds easy.

Screw a slug gun unless your hunting thick stuff and need more than one shot. Any decent ML is the way to go. Most slugs are good out to 150 on the long side and MLs are good to 200 or even more with practice. I shoot a Savage and am getting 3 inch groups at 200.

If I was there I'd be hunting with my Savage ML. If you opt for a shotgun, Stephen is right on with the Tarhunt. At one time (and maybe still do) Savage made a bolt action 12 ga. shotgun with rifled barrel which was supposed to be pretty accurate.
I'd probably want both an accurate ML and a rifled barrel shotgun. I'd use the shotgun on stands back in the woodlots where the distance would be more limited, and the Savage hunting around the fields where there is an opportunity to stretch a shot.

Remington 870 has always worked for me.
Ditto: lived in 2 shotgun states. Used a 16ga 870 w/20" smooth barrel, rifled slug, and a scope. It puts a hurting on a deer. Also used an 1100 with a rifled barrel and a sabot slug.....OUCH. I still take my shotgun out if I'm hunting small plots. I'm good out to 150yds all day. Tried Buck Shot once in VA, it was VERY effective, but ruins a lot of meat.
