I learned today that Iowa is a shotgun and muzzleloader state. A centerfire rifle can be used in the southern part and certain centerfire pistols allowed all over. Since my job is transferred there, that's my new hunting state!
Anyone have any ideas on slug guns?

I don't have a clue. I would just stick with a muzzleloader if it were me.

Get you a TC Encore and get you a 460 S&W Magnum 20" Katahdin barrel. A 200 gr Hornady FTX bullet chronos 2832 fps. You will be good to 250 yds easy.

Screw a slug gun unless your hunting thick stuff and need more than one shot. Any decent ML is the way to go. Most slugs are good out to 150 on the long side and MLs are good to 200 or even more with practice. I shoot a Savage and am getting 3 inch groups at 200.

If I was there I'd be hunting with my Savage ML. If you opt for a shotgun, Stephen is right on with the Tarhunt. At one time (and maybe still do) Savage made a bolt action 12 ga. shotgun with rifled barrel which was supposed to be pretty accurate.

I'd probably want both an accurate ML and a rifled barrel shotgun. I'd use the shotgun on stands back in the woodlots where the distance would be more limited, and the Savage hunting around the fields where there is an opportunity to stretch a shot.

Ditto: lived in 2 shotgun states. Used a 16ga 870 w/20" smooth barrel, rifled slug, and a scope. It puts a hurting on a deer. Also used an 1100 with a rifled barrel and a sabot slug.....OUCH. I still take my shotgun out if I'm hunting small plots. I'm good out to 150yds all day. Tried Buck Shot once in VA, it was VERY effective, but ruins a lot of meat.

I hardley ever take my shotgun out of the truck unless I'm pushing an area. I've had my Mossberg with red dot scope for a long time and it's pretty good to 120 yards with the slugs I use, but prefer my Encore. You can party hunt during shotgun seasons so some groups do deer pushes and anyone can shoot a deer as long as someone in the group has a legal tag. The rifle season is in the middle of January and is for anterless deer only and the tags go fast in certain counties. Unless you're a qualified land owner you can only get one anysex tag for the gun seasons and you can't hunt every season. I get a doe tag for 1st shotgun and hunt with my brothers. I'm legal to shoot a buck as long as one of them still has a legal tag for it, and I get my anysex tag for late ML season along with some extra doe tags. No gun season is open during the rut, but during 1st shotgun season(1st Saturday in Dec.)sometimes the bucks are still chasing late doe.

I hunt Indiana. We are a shotgun state. I LOVE my Remington .870!!!! I prefer it over my Knight ML. I only use the muzzeloader during the muzzeloader season.

Make sure you have a rifled barrel and shop around and find the sabots that your gun shoots best. My gun likes the Winchester Partition Golds real well. I have never missed a deer with my shotgun. A quality slug gun with a rifled barrel and a properly matched slug is as good as it gets for taking whitetails. Granted, I never have to shoot real far, but in most hunting situations where I hunt, a 100+ yard shot is a rarity.

I don't care for muzzleloaders, too much work to tear down and clean (at least mine is). Plus, I don't like waiting for the smoke to clear to see what the reaction of the deer is. It is important to see where the shot hits and how the deer reacts and muzzleloaders make that very hard to do.

Just personal preference I guess.

A Savage smokeless mz will solve all these problems and more!
I would go with one of the specialty slug guns with a rifled cantilever barrel and a rifle trigger to boot, stay away from a standard shotgun 'slap trigger'. I have and have hunted with several brands of shotguns with a good rifled cantilever barrel with scope, but yet you always stilll have that sorry arse shotgun trigger yet to deal with. I would also definitely have my Savage smokeless when the situation called for it!

I guess I don't have as sensitive fingers as you, but I don't even know to what you are referring. I am not a gun expert by any means, but I have shot a few rifles and I own 3 shotguns. I have never sensed much difference between the triggers on any of them. I just look through the scope on my .870 and slowly squeeze until the gun fires. It has worked, without fail, every time, and in every conceivable weather condition. I have had muzzleloaders hang fire on me more than once. I missed a deer once because of that. They lost a few points of esteem for me that day.

Maybe if I laid out some big money for a more modern muzzleloader, I would begin to change my tune. But since I value my marraige, I guess I will hold onto my trusty .870. You won't find a more reliable soldier for 350 dollars...in my opinion.

Shotguns have what is called a slap trigger, which is designed basically to be pulled instead of squeezed! Much more travel and normally much heavier than a good crisp rifle trigger. These bad triggers will make your accuracy really suffer! I cant even believe you dont notice a difference, its HUGE!

I guess it is just what you get used to. When I am shooting a gun of any kind, the last thing that is on my mind is what the trigger feels like. It is an instinctive moment for me. I just focus and squeeze and at some point during that instinctive act, the gun goes kaboom. The only time I can ever remember the act of squeezing a trigger is the time when nothing happened...ie. muzzleloader hangfiring. In that case, I squeezed and got to the end and still no kaboom...I didn't like that much.

You know with a deer in my sights I really can't say I've ever felt the trigger to be crisp or sloppy. One thing about having a good ML, you can hunt both shotgun and ml season with it. May depend on what type of hunting you'll be doing too. If setting most of the time you'll have a standing shot, if pushing or posting the end of a timber it's not going to be a standing shot very often and a couple extra rounds is nice to have. I'll just stick with my 30 year old Mossberg 500 and Brenekee slugs if I choose to use a shotgun. Two years ago I shot 3 deer in less than a minute using my ML, the last one was 225 yards away and would've been a tough shot with a slug gun. I have carried both shotgun and ML if setting up on a place where we where going to do a deer drive. Figured I had the long and short range shots covered.

I to would opt for a good ML like the Savage ML2. Shotgun would try to find the Savage Bolt 12 ga mentioned above or there newer 20ga,unless I got a deal on a A-Bolt.

My 870 SP came with a Remington rifle trigger and yours may have too. That may be why you have not noticed the usual slop in a shotgun trigger before it discharges. My 12 Guage 870 likes the Hornady 2 3/4" sabot. 1.75" group at 100 yards.
But, I also use my Encore Muzzleloader at Fort Campbell when hunting clear cuts that may stretch the shot though.

Rem 870 or 1100 either one with cantilevered rifled barrels. Period. MLs are great.....for ML season. The first time you have a primer misfire, you'll realize that there was no reason for the deer to snort at you and trot off.

he is 100% correct..
hunting ft campbell i had a mossberg 12 with a rifled barrel..i couldnt hit anything from 50 yds..the gun kicks so much harder then a muzzle loader then add the trigger pull and it made me jerk the gun even more ..i actually shot it one time in front of my brother and pulled the trigger and jumped and the gun didnt go off because i didnt pull the trigger enough and jumped out of the shot..he started laughing and i handed it to him and he done the samething..
