Well,
Which works better for you? I like to knock on doors but strategically it doesn't always work out. I have a couple of properties that I am trying to get permission to hunt but the people don't seem to be easily accessible. I don't have much experience writing letters so I am looking for some advice.
Thanks!

I just cant look well upon either one. If I dont know someone, like actually know them, then they definitely arent hunting anything I own. Hunters just have such a bad reputation among landowners, and rightly so most of the time. Surely theres someone out there that you know well and knows you well enough to think your a good enough guy to let hunt their land?

I've only had to ask permission to hunt once. I brought my pretty little wife along. If had been just me it would have been a "no." But the old lady liked my wife and said yes.
But I have asked numerous times for permission to trap. Look respectable and act respectable. I bring my wife along many times. I have rarely been turned down. Then again not too much competition these days for trapping.
The only way a letter will be successful is if you send it to somebody who is having a real problem with deer and doesn't already know anybody to help. Meeting in person you can make that human connection.

i have never gotten a response with a letter.

Thanks guys. I know one of the 4 property owners that I am targeting to hunt and the other 3 landowners know my family by name but not too personally. 2 of the 3 have just moved to the area so it is just a matter of them getting to know us. I used to have permission on one of the properties but that means nothing once the property is sold. We'll see how it goes.

If they are hard to find at home, use anold device called a telephone. Maker an appointment. If they agree to see you, you have a chance. If they don't, you probably wouldn't have anyway.

Well, I am happy to report that I took your advice and slow and steady is going to win this race. I got a call back from the lady that owns the land and I was warned that she is very eccentric and is a tough cookie. She left me a voicemail and was very firm in her no to my hunting her property. I called her back this morning and through the course of the conversation, I let her know that I do not hunt the area with a rifle (rural neighborhood setting) and that I am a trustworthy young man. By the end of the conversation we were talking Titans football (she bleeds Titan's blue) and I made an appointment to help her clean her gutters (she insists on paying for my time.) While I didn't get permission, I at least made a new friend and will be able to help out a fellow neighbor! Thanks for everyone's input on this one. I have an outstanding letter to another landowner so I will report how that one goes in the next few days...

Cool ! Don't give up , there may be a chance of hunting after she knows a little about you & your intentions !

A single friend once told me that when he goes out, if he asks 100 women to go home with him and 99 say no, it was still a successful evening. Seems like the same would hold true for land permission.
