with 3 or 4 fired primers before it gets its final charge...that has made the biggest impact against ever haveing any misfires for me...

IMO opinion this will cause a misfire much quicker than dealing with a good clean gun. I never foul mine on purpose before I even start! I site it in clean and I hunt with it clean!

I always fire a couple of primers thru mine right before loading it also. Just to burn off any excess oil that may have accumulated and be sure it's clear.

As recommended per factory instructions, I run a patch down the barrel with the ramrod, fire a primer, and check to see that the patch has been burned thru. This validates that fire is coming thru the breech plug, and burns any oil residue that may be inside as well. Has always worked well for me.

This I can understand, but why in the world would you bust 3 or 4 caps, fouling everything inside, when it should be nice and clean?? I've never in my life even busted a single cap when I clean mine myself, but to each his own I guess.

For ten years or more I would leave mine loaded from year to year or at the least not clean it. The past two to three years loading it started becoming an issue. A quickload for a possible follow up shot became virtually impossible! Firing it after sitting for a year also became an issue and my TC Thunderhawk is pre-removable breech so pulling a load is the only option short of removing the nipple and dumping a little fresh powder in to fire{not the best way to do things}. My shot grouping was going haywire as well!
I now believe in fully cleaning after 5-6 shots or when putting away after season. My grouping is back to where it was when I fell in love with this gun! I can load it with a speed loader in a matter of seconds{well under a minute} again for that "just in case" scenario as well!

I should of been a little more pacific' I reckon...I will put a clean dry patch on the end of my jagg and run it all the way down onto the nipple passage before I bust any primers..when the patch shows dry I load the charge in it...I have never had a misfire with a #11 cap since doing it...as you say, to each his own... \:\)

I always discharge my muzzleloader in the woods before I leave...never want to leave that stuff in the barrel. I use Blackhorn 209 and still avoid leaving my muzzleloader loaded.

A muzzleloader left loaded, is probably the most dangerous gun
in the world. People tend to forget over time. I know many will
say I never forget my gun is loaded, but I wouldn't count on it
over time.

I always check mine with the mark on the ram rod, eventhough I
am "sure" that it is unloaded.

the wife's cousin, who is a member here, killed his toilet popping a cap on his "unloaded" muzzleloader. i'll let him tell the story if he sees this.
