OK - so I am planning a family camping trip up to the LBL area for some bow hunting on opening weekend (Sept 25th). I will not be taking anyone else along with me other than my family (wife and three kiddos) on this trip - I have NEVER been to LBL - I have heard noting but horror stories about snakes everywhere in the area there - truth or myth on the everywhere? My wife being from MN area not fond of snakes - one snake and she is out of there - we are planning on camping over in the "Piney Campground" area in the SW area of LBL.
Any and all (positive and or realistic) input would be good to hear back from you guys that have been there.

While I have never personally saw any poisinous snakes anywhere other than in the road at LBL, the chance is definitely there. I uh found a huge Rattlesnake dead just a few miles down the road 2 years ago.

I would recommend getting into camp a day early and taking the time to meet up with and speak to some of the guys on this forum who know that place like the back of their hand.

Camp at Piney regularly for the past 10 years...never seen a snake. Camped at some of the smaller camprgounds (Rushing Creek, Gatling Point,etc..) and saw 1 water moccassin at Gatling Point. The key is, don't look for them!

Swing by the chestnut loop in Piney Campground. There will be several members of tndeer there camping and hunting on opening weekend.
As for snakes I am sure they are there. I have seen one rattlesnake (on the road) and one "black racer" walking through a grass field. Then saw a chicken snake where we parked to turkey hunt and an Eastern Hognose on the road. Oh yeah and a baby rattler, about 6" long in the woods.
Those are the only snakes I have ever seen there. I have been hunting there at least once a year for the last 10 years or so.

I see venomous snakes commonly on the roads on cool nights at lbl
Ive had maybe 5 actual encounters with venoumous snakes on lbl in the last year to year and a half and im in the woods just about every day.
2 rattlesnakes 2 copperheads 1 cottonmouth
Havent heard about any in the campgrounds all summer. not saying it couldnt happen though.

make sure u wear your snake boots.. i try to watch where i step i try to avoid walking over logs and around old brush ..if i do have to walk over a log i step up on the log and take a look around ...i DONT just step over a log ..when the mornings get cooler snakes will come out and lay in the sun to warm up so i try to advoid sun spots in the woods..
i hate snakes esp when u look down and he is sitting by your foot.. last time i done that i was fishing and i dropped my pole and havnt been back to get it yet..

I think another member here just went up there Saturday and he ran over some Copperheads. I ran over several Copperheads on the road to Piney last season at this time. Just be careful but make her aware that she will "probably" see one or two on the roads in the evenings.
