Ditto with my Knight and Optima.

Well now I don't feel so bad. Mine is loaded too. I hate cleaning it!

For no more than what it costs for 3 Pyrodex pellets and a Power Belt, I'm not risking the charge getting moist. It's just one of those Newton's Laws - Greg doesn't clean out his gun, he gets no deer. Maybe you guys have better luck than me.

Black powder, even Pyrodex, is "hydrophilic" (water attracting), so it will attract moisture naturally over time (actually, a very short time.) It's never a good idea to leave powder in the barrel, unless you don't mind your barrel pitting and rusting in the area of the charge. It's also not very safe to leave one loaded. A friend of mind has a limp to this day after getting shot in the leg by a "friend" that left his muzzleloader loaded and lost track of that fact... It took a fist-sized chunk of flesh out of his calf.

From the Hodgdon site: "Pyrodex does produce a corrosive residue from combustion. Even though this fouling is softer than the fouling produced by blackpowder, firearms should be cleaned after each use. Hodgdon Powder Co. recommends the use of natural cleaning solvents."

Conpicuously absent from their information is no mention that Pyrodex or Triple 7 is any less hydrophilic than black powder. It's only true advantage is that it's easier to clean up.

So, the moral of the story is, if you want your black powder rifle to last a while, clean it up, and don't leave it loaded! But, if you're independantly wealthy and can afford a new gun (and friends) every few years, leave it be.

Unloading a muzzleloader is usually easiest and cleanest to do by removing the breach plug, dumping the powder, and pushing the bullet out the breach. If you leave it loaded for long periods of time, it'll get even easier after a while as the chamber area widens from pitting and rust. ;\)

Definitely push it out the breech, no reason to make a huge mess when you dont have to. It will be much easier to clean a 1 inch spot where the dry powder was resting vs the whole gun if you shoot it!

for safety concerns, ALWAYS neutralize(get it wet) the powder before trying to remove a load.

I had mine sited in and loaded in anticipation of the 2007 ml hunt when I wreck my bike..that knocked me out of the next two yaers...I decided to hunt on the spur of the moment(the night before) in the 2009 ml season when I realized that it was till loaded from 07 ...I said the heck with and took it in the next morning like it was....it shot flawlessly killing a doe at 90 yards...not the ideal thing to do but I did...
I am very maticuless about cleaning any oil out of the nipple and powder seat with 3 or 4 fired primers before it gets its final charge...that has made the biggest impact against ever haveing any misfires for me...
