Even if I have only shot it once, I take it apart and clean thoroughly before putting up for the year. I might pop one primer with a patch on the cleaning rod before loading, usually don't, but the more primers to shoot, the more fouling accumulates and the chance of a missfire increases.

every year i think i will get a new muzzleloader and then i take the old thunderhawk to the woods and wonder why would i want a new one. I have never owned or shot another gun-including centerfire rifles that are as comfortable in my hands as the Thunderhawk! Now I am taking the proper care of it so that it will continue to perform for many years to come!

I had to put some heat to my old black diamond (I let buddies borrow it during season) to get the breach plug out this year. It has been stuck for at least two years. The rifling is still easily visible but there is a lot of funk in the barrel as well. Any recommendations for getting this out? I don't expect this to ever be a 150 yard gun again, but I don't want to set anybody up for failure.

I've had to heat them before just to get the breech plug out. Not on mine but friends who may not clean their MZ's as good as they should.
I mentioned the heating method to remove a stuck plug and got a bunch of replies from 'experts' on here. It was a terrible idea according to them. Said it would soften the steel and render the gun worthless. Whatever.

By the way, Mr. Ken French, former higher up with TC just passed away. He was one fine gentleman.

Well, if mine is ruined due to the heat, it is no worse than is was before due to the fact that the thing was the most fouled barrel I have ever seen. Unlike smokeless powder firearms. I use bows and muzzleloaders hard and replace when necessary. My black diamond did about 10 years of service and definitely received more abuse than is should have due to my youth. It took a few years for me to start using a long socket to remove the breach instead of removing the scope. I now have a SS Omega and it should last much longer.

Unless it was near glowing, you probably didn't hurt it much. So long as it only got hot enough to melt/loosen up the frozen plug grease, you oughta be okay (but don't take my word for it!)
Leaving 'em fouled probably hurts 'em more overall.

I fire mine before putting it up. I use the old style hawken, so i can't take out the breech plug to clean it.
