Last season I had one munching on them 15 yards from my stand, but that was the first time I have ever seen it happen. So, from my experience I will have to say yes, but I have watched 100's of deer walk over the nuts at the same location and haven't seen a single one even think about stopping to eat them. Will they eat them...yes. Are they a preferred food source...I would say without a doubt—no.

A friend of mine swears he's watched deer chew 'em up. He was watching through binoculars so he got a good look. That was a bad acorn year. I've never seen it myself.

I had a friend who witnessed the same last year. I have killed over 100 deer and have never seen it nor found them in the deers belly.....
Not doubting anyones word, just wish i could see the evidence myself. those are some of the hardest nuts there are.....why/how do they do it?...

The oldest buck I've ever killed, a 6.5 yr old, had hickory nut hulls in his mouth.
