...the meaning of "trophy" is too subjective for any meaningful debate.
I never understand these kind of statements. Every NFl player wants to win the Super Bowl, every Major League player wants to win the World Series, and every deer hunter wants to kill a huge buck. It's the pinnacle of our sport. Sure, I agree the term "trophy" is relative to different parts of the country, but record book bucks are definitely the pinnacle of our sport. Every buck I've killed means something to me, but are they all "trophies"? Absolutely not.

And..................if i feel its a trophy i dont care for someone else re-defining what i feel is a trophy. The attitude of Elitism in this sport is almost as nauseating as the elitism in the sport of Golf! Golf is run with an elitism attitude and that attitude is spoiling hunting for the most part. Greed is the root of it.

I can barely believe it myself. But I just saw (at 9 AM EST, on Versus) Deer and Deer Hunting, a show that asked the question: What constitutes a more difficult (and therefore more indicative of a better hunter) deer to kill? A 2.5 year old PUBLIC land deer that has been hunted hard its' whole life? Or a 5.5 (plus) deer on PRIVATE land that has been "let go" for several years while waiting to grow huge antlers.
It was a VERY good show that explained the differences between the amount of skill needed to kill "street smart" deer vs. low pressure deer that may have age and head gear, yet lack the "evasive" skills of their high pressure counter part public deer. This was hosted by both editor of D&DH mag. and Charles Alsheimer.
So again I say to all you high pressure public land hunters (ex.-AEDC). If you are killing 2.5 year old plus deer with ANY regularity...then you are killing "TROPHY" deer. Buck or doe.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I had to go back and read this again, and I'm glad that I did....I see what the real question is and here is what I suggest...
First off, I do not like or even register in my mind the term LET GO simply because it is useless in this discussion. IMo, the term LET GO suggests that the deer has felt LESS pressure because he KNOWS that he is not going to be killed until he gets to a certain age or class, sort of like a free pass.....my question is, does the deer KNOW that he is getting a free pass and thus he can RELAX???? Of course not. A 5.5 year old deer has spent 5.5 years avoiding hunters, and thusly has more experience doing so than a 2.5 year old.
I don't play in to the whole HUGE difference in private and public land pressure. I guess the size of the land would matter, BUt that can work both ways....I have seen small tracts of private land that was hunted to death.....15 hunters on less than 200 acres was not uncommon. I'm sure that a lot of private land is not that crowded.
I'm sure that this question can be answered many ways. Private DEER FARMS,thousands of acres in size, where deer are not pressured at all make most every deer EASY to kill and on MOST small hunt club leases and even public land MOST every deer is a bit more difficult to kill.
So, I guess my answer is....."depends on the circumstances..."
