Public land is much much harder , there are few if any 5.5s that live on Public land , they tend to get killed off much earlier!

do deer get easier to kill since they are pressed to move more by hunters or are they harder to kill because they learn more about how to evade them?
alot of times, on crowded land (public or private) hunters simply drive deer by other hunters. On land not very crowded, deer are able to simply lay down and avoid hunters by staying put....no or little pressure allows mature deer to find sanctuaries, making them harder to find...imo.

Little to no pressured deer will move about during daylight hours normally, making them much more available to be seen by the smart hunter! Highly pressured deer become nocturnal and avoid all areas of human intrusion after enough disturbance.
Although I dont think many deer ever go 100% totally nocturnal, if they only move say 100 yards in the course of a full days light, makes them very hard to kill!

Being nocturnal only works well if a deer is hidden in areas not much used by hunters...the more hunters, the more chance a deer (nocturnal or not) gets bumped from it's bed and pushed by another hunter......imo, the fewer hunters you have per acre makes finding that buck even more difficult simply because he is not pushed.
private land usually means fewer hunters so deer have more areas to bed during the day where they will not be disturbed...public land hunting often times puts more hunters in areas where deer bed and thusly they are spooked out of their beds and pushed by other hunters.....somewhat resembling an organized deer drive.
Like I said before, it does not take alot of hunters to turn a mature deer nocturnal. one glimpse of man or even your scent will clue him in to what's going on and he may indeed go underground at that moment.THEN, with few hunters out walking around, he can simply scoot along the thickets and avoid a single hunter with little effort,making him harder to kill than a deer that is constantly getting pushed by many hunters.....
Many times even on private land, it takes hunters to move the deer around. many times if food is close, deer won't move around much, even if pressure is light to non-existant. Deer move more out of neccessity and less out of desire.....pressured or not.

To say a 2 1/2 year old buck on public land is smarter than a 5 1/2 year old on private land, is laughable.
If we were talking about a 2 1/2 year old public land deer compared to a 3 1/2 year old private land deer, then we might be having a conversation.

A trophy is something that you get at the end of ball season that's made of plastic and maybe a cultured marble base. A DEER IS A DEER. Whether it's 2.5 or 5.5 it's still a deer! If you put in time hunting it and successfully kill it (not harvest) you've had a good hunt.....
