what makes it harder?

Is it the lack of deer? the number of hunters per 100 acres? Is it the lay of the land, maybe the access points...etc.??

I'm just curious ????

I've hunted private land that had one hunter per 25 acres on some days.

Well, I hunt a pretty good mix of both each and every year, from a private farm in Pike co. Ill. to public property in East TN.
I will have to say that the Private property is definitely easier to hunt, strictly due to the circumstances that you have control of, which you dont on public land. I'm not sure the comparison they used is completely accurate, but I will agree that most public land deer are harder to come by per age class vs, private property. Im not sure there is a 3 yr handicap there, but definitely some difference. As for the ones hunting private property that is way overcrowded, WHY, there is better public land available.

private land deer get plenty of pressure and all season. Public land deer get extreme pressure in bursts. I don't know which one gets smarter, but a deer being passed will not make him dumber.

Deer in TN are pressured different than deer in Ohio, Iowa, Texas, or wherever else you want to name. Texas' deer feeder deer act much different than our deer that aren't fed. Our deer are more pressured. Go bow hunt public land in Ohio and most other vehicles you see will be out of state. Those deer aren't pressured like our public lands.. Go up there in Shotgun season to the same place and you might get shot. Every state, every, county, and every farm all have deer that are pressured different and react to pressure different. So if it makes you happy then shoot it. I know how hard it is to see 2.5 year old deer on some of my places. I also know the one time I went to hunt Ohio I saw 3 deer that were "mature" and passed on several smaller bucks in 5 days of hunting. More deer?? prob. More mature deer?? w/o a doubt. But those deer weren't near as spookish as east tn deer. Kill what you want and be happy.

Its just all depends on which public land your talking about. Public land in my area isnt as pressured as private land. Private land is pressured much more because there are more deer on private land. A 5.5 year old buck is just as street smart on a private land parcel as he is on the Big South Fork or Pickett, at least in my neck of the woods.

any deer or animal for that matter public land, private land, or 5 acrea canned fence hunt that makes you want to scream, jump up and down, hoot an hollar, call your moma, your wife and your best friend after you recover it is a trophy. It doesn't matter if its an 8 month old doe, or the next world record buck that gets you your own hunting show.

u seem to be a pretty smart hunter
think about it,,

on most clubs hunters have a certain area they hunt and seem to stay in that general area .generally other hunters dont walk in and they respect you more..i know several clubs u cant even step in the woods until muzzle loader ..i use to joke with some guys at work about sitting in the same ladder stand yr after yr after yr..i havnt moved my ladder stand on private land in 5 yrs why because deer funnel into the area with no pressure u put several other hunters in that area its totally differt///u bump a big deer at ft campbell u will never see him again...

public land u have to very moblie and be able to move ..u have to scout more to fine areas ..i have never seen any big bucks in a field during hunting season on public land maybe a spike or young does.. private land u put ur food plots and kill deer out of them.

after yrs and yrs of hunting ft campbell and lbl most hunters i talked with have killed alot of bucks that got pushed to them by other others so sometimes more hunters do get the deer up and moving...
