I posted on here last year that I would have corn planted on my farm for deer this year..and I do, I bought a 6 row jd no till planter and now have about 8 acres of corn.. In the years past I have broadcast corn a month or so before season to try and draw the deer from my neighbors farm to mine.. I have been told that the reason we dont have baiting legally here in Tn is because of the spread of diesese.. well here is what I have noticed.. when I broadcast the corn the deer would brouse around eating it until it was gone, now.. I have a cornfield next to my house, here is what I see on a daily basic.. A deer will pull a ear off the stalk, waller it around in its mouth trying to get the kernels off the cob, it will drop it and another deer will pick it up and do the same thing.. its funny to watch them eat it.. but.. my point is.. sometimes the same corn cob will be picked up and dropped by as many as 10 different deer before its completely eaten.. they would rather eat a ear of corn another deer is eating than to get their own.. now.. if this isnt a good way to pass along disease I dont know what is.. at least when I broadcast the corn last year they didnt get a mouth full and spit it out for another to eat.. after my deer eat their belly full of corn they all mosey up to my mineral block and they all take turns licking it too...

Many reasons exist not to allow baiting. Disease transmission is only one of those reasons.

studies show that people who just pile up corn on the ground can cause fungus and diseases that can be spead aroung by deer. but also the use of gravity feed feeders or feeders on timers rarley show that deer actully get deseases from this style of baiting! as long as the deer are eating it quickly and the bait just dont sit, then the chances of deseases are low!

Just curious...what are some of them BSK?

I don't believe this has any legal importance to it, but in my opinion baiting just takes away from the challenge.

Not BSK but...
(FYI - these are simply a few of many examples.)
- Behavioral Impacts - Deer adjust their feeding behaviors according to the supplemental feed. Some may even decrease their diurnal feeding and go to strictly nocturnal feeding patterns.
- Physiological Impacts - Ozaga and Verme showed excessive neonatal mortality among 2 and 3 year old females as crowding increased in fed populations.
- Increased Parasite Loads - The density of animals in a group and the frequency of their contact is correlated to the spread of disease and parasites (Martin et al. 1987, Thrusfield 1997).
- Increased Disease Spread - The increased spread of Bovine brucellosis, Bovine tuberculosis, and CWD can all be attributed to supplemental feeding (various researchers).
- Decreased Hunter Success Rates - A South Carolina study discovered hunter success rates were lower in areas of the state where baiting was allowed versus areas where baiting was illegal (Ruth 2007).
- Non-target Species Concerns - Supplemental feeding does not target only one species. Corn often supplied for deer has resulted in high turkey mortality when aflatoxin infects the bait site. Many other furbearers are negatively affected by feed sites.
- Human Conflict - The enjoyment of one may be the nuisance of others. Many complaints are registered when folks feed wildlife. Often times neighbors that don't want the animals around experience damage to their property.
- Human Safety Concerns - Improperly placed feed sites may increase automobile collisions.
- Wildlife Habituation - A fed bear is a dead bear. Enough said.
- Not Accepted - Probably the most important fact is it is widely frowned upon by the hunting and non-hunting communities.
I could actually list more but I really got get working on something else.

Yup! Shooting an animal over a pile of corn isn't hunting. Shooting yes, but not hunting.

Yep, I look at it as pure laziness. You gotta earn it, and that is the fun/satisfying part. besides think of what you're missing by sitting over the same corn pile every hunt.
