PLEASE GO TO THE ABOVE THREAD AND READ ABOUT SUSPENSION TRAUMA - A PERSON HANGING IN A SAFETY HARNESS CAN BECOME UNSCONSIOUS IN AS LITTLE AS 6 MINUTES WITH DEATH FOLLOWING
A SAFETY HARNESS IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR HUNTING OUT OF A TREE STAND BUT YOU NEED TO HAVE A PLAN AND SYSTEM TO GET BACK TO THE GROUND AFTER THE FALL...... ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE THAT USE CLIMBING STANDS AND DO NOT HAVE ANY KIND OF STEPS ATTACHED TO THE TREE
PLEASE BE SAFE OUT THERE

(PLAN A) Always take a cell phone as long as it works where you hunt! (PLAN B) Carry a knife to cut the strap and shimmy down the tree. You will shred your chest and stomach but some cuts and bark burn is a lot better than a wheel chair!

Sorry, calling BS. People hang for hours in parachutes with no ill effects. Just watch on TV. They wouldn't lie......Or you could just carry a screw in tree step in your pocket. Medically speaking however, it's not ischemia or lack of oxygen, but acidosis on release that would be fatal. Just sayin'.

I won't worry about it, because I don't do trees anymore. I have
had a few close calls over the years and nearly fell out of some
trees. It just ain't natural for me to be up a tree.
It is an advantage to be elevated, but you can have good success
hunting from the ground. My best bucks have been killed from the
ground, but I'm not trying to campain for others to do so.
Just be careful when you hunt from a tree. One split second
mistake can be tragic. As far as the trauma from a harness goes,
I know nothing about it. All I do know is, I wouldn't want to
"dangle" for too awfully long.

Sorry, but this one was really bothering me because I just don't believe death can occur from this by just "hanging around" so to speak. Now, I'm not a doctor (thank God), but I have been a paramedic (thank God) for 10 years, so I know a little about anatomy and physiology. If you read further in the links from this article, orthostatic intolerance is an automatic nervous system (brain, spinal cord)and the circulatory system (heart, vasculature)regulatory problem, meaning that essentially there is a deficiency in the heart or brain in regulating blood flow through heart rate or blood pressure. While one certainly could pass out if, when standing, these systems did not make the proper adjustments like increasing heart rate and vasoconstriction, I can't see where they would find any correlation to hanging from a harness.
Keep in mind that these articles are written by people with ideas. I don't think anything in medicine is absolute, but here is an article about compartmentalized injuries, which would be our example of a FAS. One surprising thing not mentioned is about acidosis following release. Here again, maybe it is taken for granted in this article. Compartment Injuries
Without going into a physiology lesson on sodium, potassium, calcium etc molecules in the myocardial cell, in these injuries, lactic acid is built up in the distal end of the extremity (south of the harness) and builds up to excessive levels. When the harness would be released, the acid would rush to the heart and severely disrupt the correct pH of the blood supplying the heart with nutrients. It would then cause an aberrant cardiac rythm and death from cardiac arrest. 6 minutes seems way too quick for that to build up. As far as cutting off circulation, the brain autoregulates that when there is blood loss to the extremities, it shunts blood to the core so as to maintain life. Pretty amazing computer God created. I've probably lost you by now, but just my .02. But it could happen after an extremely prolonged period, I guess.
