But but but that's ALL I hear on the hunting shows! "We want to take this buck out of the heard b/c we don't want all these 8 pts mixing in and killing out the 10 pt genes." I've heard this exact quote. That's hunting show-speak for "we've got to shoot something to keep our viewers interested and our sponsors satisfied. Can't call it a trophy, so we'll call it a cull. Yea, yea, that's it, a cull."

I asked one of the guys that runs a ranch in TX I think on this site what he considered "cull". He said it was used mainly for pricing. A buck of lets say 150" and better would be the standard price. If you shot one less than that it would be considered a Cull or mangement buck. Just a term to classify a grade of buck. I agree with all the post about it being an excuse. You should be proud of what you shoot or don't shoot it.

Pastor hit it right on the head. i don't think " culling " will really improve a deer herd unless you have a high fenced area and you know exactly whats breeding. in the wide open TN woods there are small antlered bucks running around that we may never see so if you shoot a buck with no brows or whatever you define as a cull i really don't think it will have that big of an impact on the deer in your area.
Personally, i won't shoot a buck unless it's going on the wall. if i want meat than i'll shoot a doe.

Humans like to feel that THEIR actions are making a difference (big or small). they MUST have their hand into everything.....
That's why they plant foodplots, put out salt blocks and take out a certain number of deer (does or culls)......they can't ever seem to just leave an area alone and hunt it as is, take the deer they want and never give any thought to management or peer pressure.......we seem to worry too much what the next guy is doing or what he thinks about what we are doing......
Does it REALLY make a difference......unless you hunt a fenced in area or thousands of continuous acres, I don't think there is anyway to really tell for sure.
IMO, do whatever makes you happy........if it "sits well" with you, then go right ahead.....
