oh and as far as shooting mature deer with small racks... i will gladly shoot any mature deer because in TN that is an accomplishment that isn't easy to accomplish. i think i read somewhere that the average age of bucks killed in TN is only 1.5.
if that's the case than that is sad. i may get flamed for this but that is why i would love to see a one buck rule put in place here. how many times do you think a TN hunter has killed a forked horn or young buck because he had a tag? just imagine the results after just 5 years of only being able to kill 1 buck.
yeah the midwest has large bucks because of the fertile soil and large areas of ag land but they have greater numbers of mature deer because noone in their right mind will end their season to kill a spike or a small immature deer.
ok i'm off my soap box now... flame on fellas.

But but but that's ALL I hear on the hunting shows! "We want to take this buck out of the heard b/c we don't want all these 8 pts mixing in and killing out the 10 pt genes." I've heard this exact quote. That's hunting show-speak for "we've got to shoot something to keep our viewers interested and our sponsors satisfied. Can't call it a trophy, so we'll call it a cull. Yea, yea, that's it, a cull."
I can't remember which show it was, but the owner/rancher was instructing the "clients" to kill only the 8 pts to get them out of the herd so that the 10 pt genes would prevail.

And that's one of the many reasons I despise TV hunting shows. 99% of what you hear on those shows is absolute garbage.

That was true at one time, but not anymore. The age structure of harvested bucks has been steadily increasing, and as of last years stands at 38% yearlings, 41% 2 1/2 year-olds and 21% 3 1/2 and older bucks. Basically, only 2 out of every 5 bucks killed in TN is a yearling, and one in five is 3 1/2+.

What is it per unit??? Too big of a difference in hunting experiences/regulations for hunters in different units to encompass a statewide % imo.

1 1/2: 38.5%
2 1/2: 44.8%
3 1/2+: 16.7%
Region II
1 1/2: 31.9%
2 1/2: 43.2%
3 1/2+: 24.9%
Region III
1 1/2: 45.5%
2 1/2: 37.9%
3 1/2+: 16.6%
Region IV
1 1/2: 45.7%
2 1/2: 36.1%
3 1/2+: 18.2%
By these numbers, it appear Region II has the best age structure and Region III the poorest. None of the regions have a harvest of yearlings exceeding 50%.
